45. The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem - this is an ER book. I liked the story but do not think that I enjoyed the writing style.
I finished The Spirit of the Place yesterday. I had won this as an ER selection in March of last year but never received it until earlier this year which is why it has taken me so long to read it. I am still mulling over my review. I actually can't decide if I liked the book or not.
I am ...
I didn't get my copy of The Spirit of the Place either.
I finished Into the Dark last night and then started The Spirit of the Place which I received as an Early Reviewers book a long time ago. Actually, I should say which I won as an ER book a long time ago but only received a few months ago. So far, it seems pretty good so I am hopeful.
... It is a YA book and written in a very straightforward manner so it should be a fast read. After that, I have to read The Spirit of the Place which I won as an ER book eons ago but never actually received until a few months ago and had completely forgotten about. Hopefully, it will be ...
#60 While what Sean said about library size playing a part is true, it's not the only thing. I "won" The Spirit Of The Place (never showed up, I eventually bought it for myself) in March of 2008 when I had even less books in my library than I do now. What also plays a part is how well your ...
I, too, am waiting for A Tender Distance from the July 09 batch as well as The Spirit of the Place from March 08.
My list says that I reviewed Love Marriage & Spirit of the Place , but I didn't receive either one & never reviewed them. Everything else looks good. I love this feature!
... when it hit the three month point of not seeing it, along with posting in various threads with the others who never got Spirit Of The Place either.
My first anniversary of not getting The Spirit of the Place has come and gone. I do keep looking for it at the local book stores and I'll pick it up should I see it. No hurt feelings, and I've gotten a couple more ER books without having posted a review of Shem's work, so I guess I'll just quit ...
Speaking for myself, if I ever get picked for an ER book again, (and I actually get it unlike finally going out and buying Spirit Of The Place ,) I'd do my best to read the whole book. As a few others have said, sometimes things improve later in the book dispite how bad it may start out. Heck, ...
I figure the 1-year anniversary is the final time to mention that I never did get The Spirit of the Place from March 2008.
There's never been official word that it won't be coming ... and I'm posting now because I just noticed in a review that copies are still dribbling in??? :(

I think over half of us who were chosen for Spirit Of The Place never got it. I finally went out and bought it and it's on the TBR pile. If I should ever see my ER copy I'll pass it onto someone.
#156...
I'm in your same boat, and have also given up on ever getting The Spirit of the Place . Bummer. It still looks like a book I'd enjoy. Maybe I'll find it at my library.
It was the one and only book I've ever been picked for -- hopefully I'll get another some time in the future...
After almost eight months, I've given up all hope of ever getting the Spirit Of The Place . I've added it to my "To buy" list. When I'll actually get around to buying/reading/reviewing it will depend on my mood and how crazy things get at work as we go into one of our "busy" seasons.
... break in on a serious and interesting discussion, but I just read a passage so cringe-worthy I thought I'd share.
From The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem:
"Miranda leaned against the doorjamb. Seeing this man she loved make the move towards fathering, she felt her heart lighten, ...
I didn't "snag" an ER copy of The Spirit of the Place , but I got a reviewer copy from the publicist in July. It took me a while to get around to it, but I posted my review here on LT today. Frankly, if you haven't gotten your copy yet, I wouldn't view it as much of a loss. ;-)
JGoto and lyncos
I think there's still a big group of us who haven't recieved Spirit Of The Place . At this point five months later, I think we should all just forget about ever getting it.
I did not receive Spirit of the Place either. Very disappointing!
I never received Spirit of the Place either. Nor have I received Love Marriage. Since then I haven't been selected for anything - hopefully that has nothing to do with my missing reviews.
ABBY told me on March 18 that I would be receiving The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem but it never arrived. Would she want to be notified that it never arrived? ( I have no complaints, I've received others since and am delighted.) And does she want to be notified when we have put up our ...
I'm waiting for 2 books from the Literary Ventures Fund, Spirit of the Place for March and Monique and the Mango Rains for June. What luck!
... so far hasn't mailed even half of the 400 promised copies of books from the March offerings ... including my copy of Spirit of the Place .
Am also still waiting for my June book, Schooled.
NO, I have never received my copy of The Spirit of the Place which is why I haven't written a review.
... in #1, except received in New Haven, CT.
This unbelievably quick shipping completely makes up for not having received The Spirit of the Place yet. :)
And, of course, there are STILL those of us waiting for The Spirit of the Place from the MARCH batch!
Glad I found this section, as I too am still awaiting my copy of The Spirit of the Place . I'm in NC.
Count me among those still waiting for The Spirit of the Place .
I got excited when I saw that someone else from here in Austin got theirs, but my mailbox is still empty...
OK, another week come and gone, and still loads of us waiting on The Spirit Of The Place . If my figuring is right, between 15-20 people have gotten their copies. Means only about 80 of us to go. :-(
... and founder of the Literary Ventures Fund"
no, seriously? A new book? When they haven't yet mailed even half of the Spirit of the Place -es from March ?
:(
I was one of those that did not like The Spirit of the Place . I wasn't entirely sold on the book to start off with, but I was willing to give it a chance until the scene with the fishermen on the frozen lake. I couldn't believe that he used that as a plot point...
I just finished Penelope Przek ...
I liked Spirit of the Place but I got the impression from the reviews that most others didn't. It did take me a little bit before I got into it, but it was compelling enough even in the beginning that I made the effort. My review is muninn in Early Reviewers : March Book Watch (2008) (Jul 14, 2008, 5:53pm)

OMG OMG OMG!!! I finally got The Spirit of the Place ! Today! YAY!
Seeing the people who've recently gotten The Spirit Of The Place has me hoping I may actually get it before vacation is over and have time to get started on it. Once I go back to work Sunday night I may be coming home too tired to do any reading for a few days.
At least six more of us have gotten Spirit of the Place in the past few days. Mine was posted from Ann Arbor on July 3rd. I'm enjoying it so far, so I hope they get caught up on everyone soon....
Received The Spirit of the Place on Monday, July 7th, in Denver, CO. Other details as posted in message 289, above.
got Spirit of the Place 2 night ago!
Still no Spirit of the Place here in Northern California. I have been chosen to receive books since then though, so I don't think it's adversely affecting the algorithm.
Still waiting on The Spirit of the Place here in NJ. Hopefully it'll come this week while I'm on vacation and will have more time for reading.
Just received my copy of The Spirit of the Place via USPS Priority mail in Austin, Texas. Can't wait to finally read it!

I also still have not received a copy of The Spirit of the Place , nor did I receive any communication from Abby informing me that all copies had been sent. And I tend to agree with bookaholicgirl - even if the book turned out to be good, this publisher has already created such a negative ...
I'm still waiting for Spirit of the Place too.
At this point, I can no longer write an "early review" - because the book was released to the public on June 15th, according to Amazon!
I'd still like to read the book, and if it arrives, I'd be happy to write a review promptly as usual.
I haven't received The Spirit of the Place yet either despite receiving an email from Abby on June 20th saying that they had all been sent. Unless they are personally hand delivering them to each person's house, I kind of think someone was pulling her leg. And I can honestly say that at this ...
I still don't have Spirit of the Place from the March ER list. Does anyone have it?
Nothing for me this month, so I'm one for eight now. :(
(and I'm ready to not even count Spirit of the place anymore untill I actually see it arrive)
Well, I haven't received The Spirit of the Place yet, nor have I received a note from Abby. Maybe I just dreamed that I was supposed to get that book?
I received an email from Abby this past week saying that she thought that all of the copies of The Spirit of the Place had been sent out so hopefully they will be coming soon. I am not holding my breath or anything though (not because I don't believe Abby but because I don't believe the ...
... getting their copies of This Gaming Life finally. Now if only I'd start seeing messages from people finally getting The Spirit Of The Place too so I'd know to watch for mine!
Three months now, and still no sign of Spirit of the Place . I hope that at least no new ARC books are being accepted from this publisher into the ER program, until they can meet the obligation they undertook back in March. I understand that we get these books for free, and so have resisted ...
I signed up in November and (got?):
The Story of Forgetting
The Spirit of the Place (never arrived)
Love Marriage (never arrived)
America, America
Also, with Spirit of the Place some people got them from other places. I have it in my library, but I received the ARC from Literary Ventures Fund, who probably had them in supply before the publisher offered more up.
I'm missing both my March Book Spirit of the Place and April book Love Marriage. I know you keep saying you're aware that some books haven't come, but looks like many others have already gotten those same books. (I know my address is ok - I've received & reviewed my April bonus batch book.) I ...
My next few have to be
Dolphins Under My Bed
The Devil's Highway
and then probably The Spirit of the Place
All depending on when my latest ER book arrives.

14. The Spirit of The Place by Samuel Shem
15. Plum Lovin by Janet Evanovich
Now im reading Celia, A Slave which is a book I should have read a long time ago but just now getting to it.
>alaja
The Spirit Of The Place was my first and only ER snag so far. From the description it looked like it'd be an intresting and enjoyable read. Now, along with the rest of you, I sit and not so patiently wait on it's eventual arrival.
I am sad about The Spirit of the Place . I have been in the Early Reviewers group since it began and this was only the second book I was selected for and no book. and I have not been selected for any subsequent books
Count me as another one who hasn't received The Spirit of the Place and include me among the annoyed as well. While I understand that they could run out of ARCs, how could they give ARCs to another group before fulfilling their commitment to LT? And, if you promise someone a certain number of AR ...
... your efforts in getting these books mailed. I also appreciate that you track the missing books so those of us waiting for The Spirit of the Place and other books will not be penalized for missing reviews.
Kent State University Press promised 100 copies of The Spirit of the Place to LT in the March batch. As of now, only 27 LTers have it in their libraries -- and that includes people who added it before they receive it, and people who received copies for a Barnes&Noble discussion.
On May 2, Abby ...
#247 - I just got The Spirit of the Place in the mail and couldn't remember how I signed up for it either.
I'm also thinking it was through Shelf Awareness.
I haven't gotten my Penguin Classic yet, either, but I did get The Spirit of the Place , which I had totally forgot about and couldn't remember how I had even gotten hooked up to get. Book Fairy, I'm telling you I think it was through Shelf Awareness by way of this thread....

Internationally (my first): Ugly by Constance Briscoe
and an ARC from Shelf Awareness I think : The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem... which didn't work when I entered it by the ISBN, but when I hand entered it, it was there... go figure.
13. Odd Hours by Dean Koontz
Now working on The Spirit of The Place . Not sure which will be next either a memoir or a classic novel not sure yet what will strike my interest.
... having a hard time settling down with a book right now. I thought about and rejected (for now) Dolphins Under My Bed, Spirit of the Place , and Ella Minnow Pea before FINALLY settling on my ARC of The Gargoyle. I think this was a good choice, because the first chapter of this book has ...
20. The Spirit of the Place by Samuel Shem. This was an early reviewer book. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. 3 stars.
To those waiting for Spirit of the Place , as I mentioned- I signed up to get a copy through B&N awhile ago and received it today, so I would think that the ER copies would be coming any day now.

... An American Haunting By Brent Monahan
I will be starting Dean Koontz's new book Odd Hours then tackling my BN book The Spirit of The Place .
I still have not received The Spirit of the Place . At this point, I care less about receiving this book than I do about not having reviewed it causing me to not be selected again. This was the first time I've been selected for an ER book, and I've been applying in every batch since the ...

I requested an ARC of The Spirit of the Place through the B&N bookclubs, and it arrived yesterday, so hopefully yours will too! Perhaps they were behind on printing up copies for everyone...
Two months after snagging The Spirit Of The Place and seeing some others have gotten it, I'm starting to doubt I'll be seeing it anytime soon. While I know LT has no control over when books get sent out, I really have to wonder how hard it can be to send them all out at once, or at the very ...

My copy of Spirit of the Place has not arrived - hope it doesn't affect my chances for May bonus batch!

I sent an email for Pagan Kennedy's book, and The Spirit of Place , and now I'm even further into wait and see mode.

Thank you, thank you, Abby, for the update! I was worried about my copy of Spirit of the Place .
Thanks for the news, Abby, as I'm another one still waiting for The Spirit of the Place .
@200: Oh, man, that is quite a task that she's got ahead of her, because as I recall quite a number of copies of Spirit of the Place were available, plus all the others, and I expect she has other things on her plate as well. I guess for her sake I will try to be patient!

I am also waiting for Spirit of the Place . I'm in Toronto, so I'm never too surprised when it takes awhile, but this time it has crossed my threshold. I was happy to find this group. I'll try to remember to post to it when mine arrives since it was so useful to me.
I am still waiting for Spirit of the Place . It's my first ER book so I'm not sure if this is what to expect.
I'm still waiting for The Spirit of the Place from March. I see now that there are a few who have received it, read it, and written a review for it. How can they start the party without me?

No sign of Spirit of the Place from March yet. My address should still be correct as I've received ER books before. I just hope it comes in time to read it between spring and summer semesters.
Still waiting in Oregon for Spirit of the Place .
It's strange that only a couple of people got Spirit of the Place so far. That's one of those books that had a lot of copies available. I'm guessing that I'll get my April book before that one... Oh well, two books expected in the mail - that's exciting.
Hmmm...I was worried after I saw the first The Spirit of the Place arrival go up here and then mine never showed up, particularly after the review was posted. But it sounds like only two folks have gotten their books, so now I guess I'm just back to waiting. It's too bad, I recently flew cross-cou ...
I got The Spirit of the Place a week or two ago. It's my first time receiving a book so I wasn't aware that we were logging the arrivals here. So sorry if I contributed to confusion!
It is very weird that I am the only one who has received Spirit of the place . The P.S. written in the letter says "The author is also in MA" so maybe it was sent due to that? But I don't see why that would matter.
Edited to add: There is a review already up so I'm not the only one to have ...
I'm getting Love Marriage. Wow - two months in a row! I'm still waiting for Spirit of the Place .

Yay! A Spirit of the Place finally arrived somewhere!
