This book is about a girl who goes through a really long and tough Civil War. Her name is Susannah and she lives in south. Her family loses a lot of money because it was taken from them by the yankees. First, her brother goes off to fight and then her fiance leaves with him. Her family is then flipped upsidedown when her father dies unexpectedly because of a heartattack. This leaves Susannah, her mother and her younger sisters alone in a house. Some Yankee soldiers move into their house but pay them back with food and clothe for new clothing. Then another tragedy happens. Susannah's brother and fiance both are killed during battle by the same shell. She falls in love with a yankee soldier that helped her family when they were starving and they eventually get married.
I liked this book because it was kind of like a version of Romeo and Juliet. Susannah and the Yanke soldier are in love but they can't be together because he is from the north and she is from the south. Plus, Susannah is ingaged to another man. Her fiance dies in the war so then she feels okay about loving the Yankee. Her family was against slavery and tried to help the north in whatever they could do. Well, they helped the more kinder northern troops, like the ones who were living in their house for a short time. Eventually everything works out for her family and she marries the Yakee Soldier. ( )

Book description
Everything is gone...her home, her family, her past. All that is left is a forbidden love.
Susannah had lived her sixteen years as a proper Virginia girl - obedient, dreaming of marriage, leaving the decisions to the men. But when her brother and her fiance are called on to defend the South, Susannah takes the first daring steps of rebellion against the old rules. She must fight for her own life, for her family, and for the secret love born in the flames of war.
