... markets and our local organic grocery, I've managed to avoid chain grocery stores since July. I'm currently reading Omnivore's Dilemma. Very educational.

... is another great one :) I found my CSA this year through localharvest.org - Clam - I'm just about finished with The Omnivore's Dilemma

Thanks, OldSarge. After reading The Omnivore's Dilemma I've been trying really hard to buy local, even at the chain stores. They just passed a law saying produce has to be labeled with its place of origin, so I've been buying as local and organic as possible. I think this thread is a perfect ...

Heartily recommend Pollan's Omnivore's dilemma For what is wrong witht he meat industry and some possible solutions. There is no one size fits all solution, but he at least made some attempt at looking at options. Besides it's an interesting and well written book. Party was good, ...

bonnie, Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma is beautifully written, literary even. He traces the origins of four meals: a fast-food meal; a typical meal (meaning meat from today's farm, which has converted to "industrial" methods of production); a meal from a "pastoral" farm (what used to be the ...

I've recently (in the past year or so) started to add these nutrition/food books to my reading lists. I have yet to pick up The Omnivore's Dilemma, looks like I'll have to put that one back up towards the top... I have read The Compassionate Carnivore and Fast Food Nation. I've seen the movie ...

OK, that list was way too long! I've deleted it. If anyone wants the alphabetized list, tell me and I'll send it to you.

#66 Feicht, Is that really true? I'm not sure whether or not you've read Pollan, but it's worth noting that in Omnivore's Dilemma he explores a moral argument for eating meat. His essential point is that if we didn't eat meat, the cows, pigs and chickens we cultivate simply wouldn't ...

... #45: stellarexplorer - I could make an argument that everyone who lives and buys food in the United States should read Omnivores Dilemma - not from the historical perspective, but from a what-are-you-eating perspective. It's a really insightful and much-needed book.

... was so hard to do. #45 - I read In Defense of Food first, maybe a year or two ago and it had a similar effect, but Dilemma went into so much more detail. I have really tried to change the way I food shop. Along that line I really want to read that Barbara Kingsolver book about she ...

I have to throw out another pair very influential books which are more like 'food history' here: The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser - both of which left me stunned. (Author touchstones are busted.)

Indeed. So many good things here. My wishlist grew quite a bit - Omnivore's Dilemma, Terra Incognita, Women of Algiers in Their Apartment, and April and Oliver. I think I will try to read Dracula before Halloween. Kavalier and Clay is one of my favorites - I was kind of sad for it ...

I found it The Omnivore's Dilemma to be very absorbing and readable. Hope you enjoy Fingersmith too. It's rollicking good fun!

I started The Omnivore's Dilemma on Tuesday evening, but haven't gotten very far yet due to lack of time. I've heard some mixed things about its readability, but I find the topic fascinating.

The Omnivore's Dilemma is at the top of my TBR right now - looking forward to it after your review. I loved Animal Vegetable Miracle and I also liked Pollan's other book In Defense of Food. I'm aware that I probably read (will read) Pollan's two books in the wrong order! Oops...

Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan is seriously making me question what I eat, and the food industry in general. I'm reading about "organic" industry at the moment for example, and am amazed and frankly a bit put-off by how meaningless the term really is when it comes to anything bought ...
