I read this at the beach over the weekend. For some reason, I find Murakami's works ideal for beach reading, and this was a good one. Not too complicated, with just the right touch of the surreal. It's not my favorite Murakami, ... Over the weekend at the beach, I read Haruki Murakami's South of the Border, West of the Sun. For some reason, I find his books ideal for beach reading. I also started on Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride, and I finished Clan Novel: Anthology edited by Stewart Wieck last Thursda ... South of the border, west of the sun !!! 8 words, 9 syllables, otherwise, I never would have gotten it. ... the bar for the way I look at novels. I have yet to read everything by Murakami (far from it actually, only read this, South of the Border, and After Dark), for fear of finishing everything he's written. I do own copies of Hard-Boiled Wonderland, Norwegian Wood, and The Elephant Vanis ... ... Amongst these I would include Sea Otters Swimming in the Wild, Wild Surf, by John Bennett, Girlfriend in a Coma, South of the Border, West of the Sun and Cloud Atlas.
Hope something here might be a help or at least inspire someone else to come up with some good suggestions. ... over the other, but I will say that I consider Norwegian Wood his masterpiece (so far), and that Sputnik Sweetheart and South of the Border, West of the Sun are generally underrated.

I've said to a lot of people in a lot of circumstances that I like South of the Border, West of the Sun but have no idea why. Most books I like, I can take them apart and analyze them and figure out what I admired or enjoyed, but that one seems resistant to analysis. Seriously: The plot of "Guy ... I have tended to prefer Murakami’s works that are more grounded in reality: Norwegian Wood and South of the Border, West of the Sun.
I have not much liked his fantasy – some things feel false to me, rather than to suggest (as I think he is aiming to do) the sense of a greater world ... ... Affair".
I got hooked on this author after reading The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. I've enjoyed Sputnik Sweetheart and South of the Border; West of the Sun. I really liked them both but my favourite is definitely South of the Border, West of the Sun. I have Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore to read so I may still change my mind. :o) ... opinions on Haruki Murakami? I really enjoy his work, although he can be inconsistent. My favourite novel of his is South Of The Border, West Of The Sun, which matched The Remains Of The Day for its ability to convey the central character's repression of passion.
