Iyob is Eritrean, but now resides in the USA. Her book is a slim book of poetry, subtitled 'poems of war and exile'. They are mostly concerned with the civil war in Ethiopia that lead to Eritrean independence, and the consequences for ordinary Eritreans.

This was a very likable collection of poems. Although the subject matter is explicitly grim (i.e. war and exile), the real focus of the book is on Eritrea as a land and a people. There as a real warmth to Iyob's words, and a real love for her home country. I could almost feel the expanses of landscape invaded by war and the huge open spaces that were crossed on her way to exile. This was both a collection about war and exile, and also a collection about home.
