O’London describes his book at one stage as a ‘gallimaufry of London anecdote’ and I think this quaint word, ‘gallimaufry’ well sums up the rich mixture or jumble of little stories about London that this book contains.

In offering contemporary and older stories of places and people and occurrences all to do with London, the reader gets a feeling of the place that a straight history might not achieve. SO we get a lengthy account of Ann Hicks, a seller of apples, who managed little by little to build herself a cottage in Hyde Park, we learn some of the origins of ‘Pop goes the weasel’ and have anecdotes about Defoe and Turner among many.

Today it seems a quirky little anthology but I can see how it may well have filled a niche in its time and how it still offers an interesting perspective on London, its jaunty prose giving the reader a sense of O’London’s lively interest in his subject matter. ( )
