After finishing book 2 in this series, I had to pick this one up fairly quickly. The story is just that well told - you don’t want them to end. I’ve raved about this series in two other reviews of them I did. If you’re the parent of a teenage boy, I’d highly recommend you pick these up and leave them around where he might pick them up. If your a male that once was a teenage boy, and still enjoy adventure stories - especially if you also like historical fiction - you should pick these up. I will say I think the ending of this one wasn’t as well done as the ending of the last one. His next one will be published independently himself, and I’m looking forward to getting hold of it when it’s out. Excellent historical fiction with a solid base on what life was like for most people during the time of Viking invasions (before 1000 AD). Lots of action, violence and bloodshed, so if that's not your favorite fare, this may not be for you. For those mature readers (I recommend for 8th grade and up) who can handle that, this is well written with phenomenal character development. Be ready -- Roberts has no problem killing off characters you've come to like. Book 3: Road to Vengeance -- Halfdan has a prisoner to ransom back to the Franks: Genevieve, the daughter of a high-ranking aristocrat. Her story and Halfdan's connect even after he successfully ransoms her back to her family for a small fortune (with the help of Jarl Hastein). The Vikings sack Paris and await a bribe from the Frankish king to leave the country, and Halfdan bides his time waiting for his opportunity to go up against one of the men from his foster brother's crew who murdered Harald. More amazing battle scenes and subtle political maneuvers between kings, jarls and warriors. Reviewed by The Compulsive Reader for TeensReadToo.com Halfdan's quest for revenge continues in the third book of the riveting and highly entertaining STRONGBOW SAGA. He returns to his ship and captain with his prisoner, Genevieve. But he finds it difficult to protect her while at the same time fending off attacks from Toke's men. THE ROAD TO VENGEANCE is a vivid, honest portrayal of the trials and tribulations of life in the 9th-century, and it delivers an unflinching look at the many realties of that time period. This is one high-spirited adventure novel that you won't soon forget. The Strongbow Saga: The Road to Vengeance is a story about a Viking slave, Halfdan, whose life is redeemed by his mothers death. Now a free man, he is taken under the wing of his half-brother to learn the art of war. However, his brother is soon murdered and Halfdan promises to avenge his brothers death by joining a fleet of Viking war ships to find and kill his brothers murderer. Halfdans quick wit, skillful fighting, and determination soon earn him the respect of Kings and comrades alike. As he builds a reputation for himself among the Vikings he takes a Counts daughter captive and ransoms her back. Throughout her captivity, Halfdan treats his captive, Genevieve with honor and she falls in love with him. After being returned to her father in Paris Halfdan conspires for the Vikings to raid Paris and again he meets with his captive and develops a meaningful relationship. However, in the back of his mind he knows he must avenge the death of his brother, and in a final climactic battle, Halfdan risks his life to in attaining his goal. Judson Roberts spins a tale based on historical facts involving the Viking seige of Paris in the late ninth century. Many characters, events, and true making this an interesting account of this historical period. In the back of the book there is a glossary which is extremely helpful in understanding the Viking language. Also, there is a character list that helps clarify the roles of various people. Finally, the historical notes in the back are generously provided by the author to help readers sort out fact from fiction. The author also maintains an educational web site at http://www.strongbowsaga.com for teachers and students wishing to further study Viking history. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. The Road to Vengeance brought Viking history to life in a fun and imaginative way through the eyes of Halfdan, a Viking slave turned warrior. I really recommend this book to people who enjoy Viking history and don’t mind a bit of bloodshed to tell the story. no reviews | add a review

Historic fiction isn't always my bag of tea, since it can be dry and heavy-handed, but this series has great character development and well-integrated research. If you want to read about vikings, make this high on your 'to read' pile. ( )
