A beautiful and comprehensive guide to mushroom identificationThe culmination of over thirty years' work, this authoritative and superbly illustrated reference work is packed with the most up-to-date information and original photographs. Set to become the essential illustrated mycological encyclopedia for the next 25 years, this book is also clear, user friendly and will appeal to a wide range of readers. Unsurpassed in both illustrative and descriptive detail, Mushrooms contains over 1,250 photographs, often showing the specimens in various stages of growth, and including all the latest botanical and common names as well as current ecological information on endangered species. Having sold more than 750,000 copies in Europe of his previous title on mushrooms, Roger Phillips' new book once again sets the benchmark. Quite simply, nobody with an interest in the subject can afford to be without this book. 'Roger Phillips has written the best mushroom book I know: the sublime taxonomic accuracy of his descriptions and photographs, combined with an evangelical and infectious passion for the subject, will make an instant mycophile of anyone who picks it up.' Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall 'A masterpiece of identification.' David Bellamy… (more)

Fungi by B. M. Spooner (chrisharpe)
chrisharpe: Phillips is the most encyclopaedic ID guie to British fungi, while Spooner & Roberts provide a wealth of information on ecology and natural history. Both are a must for the mycophile!

Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Europe (Collins Nature Guides) by Edmund Garnweidner (chrisharpe, chrisharpe)
chrisharpe: These are my two favourite fungus field guides for the UK: Phillips making use of photos and Courtecuisse relying on illustrations. Both are excellent! For me, they are the best guides to British and NW European Fungi for the non-specialist. Unlike Phillips' and Michael Jordan's coffee-table-sized books, Courtecuisse and Duhem does fit into a jacket pocket. And it includes some very handy keys.… (more)
chrisharpe: For me, this is the best guide to British and NW European Fungi for the non-specialist, which makes it all the harder to understand why it has been out-of-print for so long. Unlike Roger Phillips' and Michael Jordan's coffee-table-sized books, this one does fit into a jacket pocket. And it includes some very handy keys.… (more)

The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe by Michael Jordan (chrisharpe, chrisharpe)
chrisharpe: A nice complement to Phillips in coffee-table (or large backpack!) format.
chrisharpe: Michael Jordan's Encyclopedia makes a nice complement to Phillips. About the same size as the 1981 Pan Phillips, this is not a pocket guide, though for field use it does fit into a good-sized backpack.

Collins Complete Guide to British Mushrooms and Toadstools by Paul Sterry (chrisharpe, chrisharpe)
chrisharpe: Phillips and Sterry & Hughes complement each other nicely. Phillips treats more species, but Sterry & Hughes will fit easily into a jacket pocket. It's well worth having them both - indeed, since none is comprehensive, it's a good idea to have as many mushroom guides as you can lay your hands on! These two make a good start.… (more)

The arrangement of this book makes it difficult to navigate and identify for an amateur scavenger, but the photographs are excellent and the information is detailed, if sometimes lacking in any personal joy of writing. ( )
