My mother was a big fan of Thomas Costain's works, and this was one of his books I discovered in her bookcase, about 40 years ago. I still remember parts of it and am sorry to hear it is so difficult to find. Apparently it is now available in a condensed version called "The Conquering Family", which I have not read.

Costain makes English history understandable and interesting, which is saying something considering how convoluted it can be!

If you see this in a bookstore, get it! ( )

This is an old book, and long out of print. Still, it is one of the more readable histories of England between 1066 and the Magna Carta. I ( )

Disambiguation notice
"The Conquerors" which covers William the Conqueror to the Magna Carta is NOT "The Conquering Family" which covers Henry I. "The Conquering Family" while derived from "The Conquerors" is a significant revision with a narrower scope. Combining the two fails the cocktail party test.
