David Burnie has authored over a hundred books in the Biological Sciences. His e guides Insect book is a hodgepodge of topics related to insects. There are articles on specific insect groups, more broad groups of insects (scavengers, true bugs, parasites, blood feeders, pollinators), and a number of topics which explore insect's connections with daily life. It is packed with information, but most of the space is reserved for large and clear photos. However, no space is wasted. Nearly all photos have text associated with them, clearly describing what is going on in the pictures or drawings.

What makes e guides different is its connection with the world wide web. At the accompanying website, http://www.insect.dke-guides.com, the reader can use keywords within the book to further explore topics covered in the book. The results of the keyword search connects the content in the book to diagrams, pictures, and videos on the website. This will give alternate presentations of the material, creating options to absorb the information. While I have not explored the website fully, the time I did spend there was hassle free and marginally enlightening. Combining the book with the website allows updating and extending material easier. If only the bloodsuckers that make textbooks would borrow this idea, I might pay off my student loans before I'm ninety.
