Blankets (I see that's been mentioned before, it's very good), it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I quite liked Neil Gaiman's Marvel 1602, though the sequels (written ... ... written and worth reading. I enjoyed them both and recommend them highly.
In a non super hero groove, I second Blankets as worth an investigation. The last graphic novel I read that impressed me.

Do re-read Stargirl d_rolambda. The sequel was quite good, IMO, but it had been a *lon ... Loved Blankets! My book club read it in December and I think we all pretty much loved it. It was my first graphic novel. I'm reading Blankets by Craig Thompson now (on ILL from the library so it gets bumped to #1 on the "to read" list, lol) and am really looking forward to Invention of Hugo Cabret.

For the more literary type, I HIGHLY recommend Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. (It got me to reread Ulysses!
Blankets is a touching memoir of growing pains.
And I liked Black Hole by Charles Burns. If you want something different than many of the above (plenty of good reading there, though! I loved both Blankets and Bone), I'd like to mention Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Maybe judged as a "girl-series", but if you ask me it's a great tale of love of all kinds and with lots ... I'd agree with all of the above recommendations, but add one that's not in the superhero genre: Blankets by Craig Thompson.
I was also quite shocked that I liked Battle Royale as much as I did -- it was very (VERY VERY) bloody (even in black and white) and graphic. If you take the ... ... high road" and say that a graphic novel is really just a prose novel told in graphical form (see, for example, Maus or Blankets). Sometimes it can be based on superhero fiction (Kingdom Come or Marvels), and thus it could qualify as a "big fat comic book."

(edited for a typo!!) Had the Blankets discussion yesterday and it was great! I think nearly everyone really enjoyed Blankets, which was unusual for our group. We usually have quite a wide range of opinions on books. I think the group member who chose it has converted a lot of us to the dark side of graphic novels!
