I read this online at Gutenberg, as translated by Oliver Colt. It's the same basic tale as La Fayette's famous novel, the Princess of Cleves: young beautiful woman falls in love with a noble man, but she is already in an arranged marriage. She never does anything more than exchange letters with him, but this is enough to make her husband mad with jealousy. She and her husband die, while her lover falls in love elsewhere and forgets her. The last line is "She was one of the loveliest of women and could have been one of the happiest if she had not strayed so far from the path of prudence and virtue." Hmm, not sure what the moral message could be...

Although this is a morality tale told very quickly, with little dialog, I still enjoyed it. ( )

I enjoyed this one, but I would have liked to see the story fleshed out more. It was so short that everything seemed rushed. I liked The Princess of Cleves better, but this one was better at integrating the historical events into the storyline. ( )
