Des Hunt writes good KIWI themed books that Kiwi kids can relate to and enjoy. This book is no exception; it has elements of suspense, action, romance and good feelings of home and safety. There is the usual bullying aspect from school kids and the good vs evil outcome. Although Hunt follows these usual themes of writing narrative the stories he writes do not become boring or tedious as he cleverly writes them in varying scenarios that the reader can relate to. This story starts of in a great way with a verse written by Tim’s nanna – really clever as it makes the sad event it retells really poignant. The overall story is about Tim finding a fossilized dinosaur tooth (that actually connected him to his mother who drowned trying to save him when he was four) when he nearly drowned. This lay undisturbed Tim revisited the site 8 years alter with his friend Mike. Tim Thomas is searching for dinosaur fossils in the hills above Pounamu, his grandparents' sheep station. But time is against him as he races to find the exact spot where the tooth lies, before the river gully is dammed and the rising waters cover the site. He also has to deal with Sam Mason, the school bully, and when Tim's horse is stolen his attempts to get her back bring him up against a gang of horse thieves. And then when it starts to rain, the waters begin to rise, and Tim is in trouble, deep trouble. There are various twists and turns that do not become too complex followed by the usual happy ending. Tim Thomas’s mother drowned when he was just four years old. They were both washed downstream during a storm. He carries only a vague memory of her, that and of a large tooth embedded in rock. He is determined to find what he thinks is a dinosaur tooth in the hills above Pounamu, his grandparent’s sheep station. Unfortunately time is against him as the river gully is due to be dammed and the water will cover the rocks where the tooth lies. Tim is also dealing with Sam Mason, the school bully and when Tim’s horse is stolen his attempts to find her lead to a gang of horse thieves. This is bad enough, but when it starts to rain and the waters begin to rise Tim realises he is in serious trouble. This is another great read from an expert in action-packed adventures in a New Zealand setting. Fast paced and very enjoyable. ( )

Great book for senior primary readers. Tim and his friend Mits are hunting for dinosaur fossils that they suspect are in the hills near his grandparents farm. He remembers seeing a tooth in the bank of the river from when he was only four and was swept down the river. His mother was swept down the river too but was drowned. Tim survived and now he wants to find out what the thing that looked like a tooth is. But unfortunately it is harder than they thought. There's a bully at school that wants to find it too. Another complication is the river is to be dammed and the banks will soon be flooded. They need to find it before the river is flooded.
