Sumner Ives on literary dialect: Even at a remove of 59 years, totally interesting, because who hasn't thought about literary dialect and the total freaky madness of its representation every time they read any book about rural people ever? The black v. white comparisons were instructive, and I appreciate finally having that "intrusive r" issue in literary-dialect orthography cleaned up for me. Kharki and worter fo-eva! Biggest disappointment: no treatment of (sorry, "uv") Nigger Jim in Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
