Many undergraduate textbooks do not take a practical approach but simply list the various pathologies and describe their presenting signs, symptoms and management. Students are taught, however, to elucidate a patient's symptoms, perform a clinical examination and make a diagnosis. 'Updated ENT', now in its third edition, aims to instruct students in how to take a patient's otolaryngological symptoms, to arrive at a diagnosis by logical steps and then to manage the problem. Taking a symptom-orientated approach and written in plain English, 'Updated ENT' forms the basis for a logical framework of thought which will prove invaluable in any specialty.
