Jill was an ugly duckling, but not anymore. Unfortunately, she comes into her own only to fall for the son of the family her own family despises, with reason. ( )

Secrets are almost always destructive and are the main theme of this novel. The women in this novel are all quite strong and appealing - larger than life, even. It was nice to have all those lovely characters have their lives turn out happily at the end. ( )

This is my favourite Mansell so far. There were many characters I liked and the story was not very predictable. I had a healthy dislike for the Marcella character - what a bossy woman interfering with other people's lives. ( )

As with all Jill's books this is really readable however the problem keeping Maddy and Kerr apart is very boarder line. There are times when you are urging Maddy on to disregard Marcella and see Kerr anyway, Marcella at times comes across as a bit unreasonable. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0755304853, Paperback)

As a teenager, Maddy Harvey was a bit of an ugly duckling, but thankfully she’s blossomed since then. But when she meets Kerr McKinnon one summer’s night and discovers, days later, who he really is, that’s when the real problems start. Because everyone in Ashcombe knows what happened 11 years ago, and as far as her mother Marcella is concerned, she would rather tear that family to pieces with her bare hands than see Maddy associate with a McKinnon. And, okay, maybe Marcella isn’t her real mother, but Maddy owes her so much. It’s Romeo and Juliet all over again. Quick, hide those sharp knives and that little bottle of poison.
