... would had benefited from an editor, to say the least. Still, I enjoyed reading them. But it wasn't until his latest - Anathem - that he got his style under some kind of control.

Thanks WW. The CS Lewis trilogy sounds particularly good. I'm reading Anathem at the moment which is sci-fi and philosophy and enjoying it a lot (although it reminds me of how long ago my degree in the subject was and how little I remember!) I absolutely loved your review of JE. What a great ...

... I loved A Canticle for Leibowitz! Absolutely loved it. I review audiobooks (for SFFaudio.com) and started to listen to Anathem, but didn't get more than one CD in before realizing that another reviewer had it. I liked Snow Crash and The Diamond Age, but haven't read any more Stephenson ...

... no? Though I do have a copy of it around that I could look at if need be. The general trope isn't necessarily new. Anathem and "Nightfall" both deal with societies' efforts to preserve knowledge in the face of cataclysm.

I've been very slow to get around to Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I am a Stephenson fanboy (although I STILL haven't read the third volume in The Baroque Cycle). Having said that, I'm pretty stumped at the judgement Stephenson (and his editor) have shown with this book: it's VERY slow to start, ...

From AHS-Wolfy's library, I chose Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I have Anathem by him laying around the house, and I haven't read it either, but both look good.

... of Cryptonomicon takes it out of the truly-Hard SF category. And I would make up a new "Quantum-Hard SF" category for Anathem. (Zodiac was just a bio-thriller and I didn't care for it, The Baroque cycle was historical fiction with a science-y bent - I lost interest half-way through ...

... it is time for a reread of A Canticle for Leibowitz, since I read (on LT, I'm sure) recently that Neal Stephenson's Anathem is a similar story and I am hoping to get to Anathem soon. I really like Oryx and Crake, too.

... Stephenson has famously switched to using pen and paper and doing everything longhand. All of the Baroque Cycle and Anathem was written in that fashion. Apparently he uses different pens (thinner nibs) for doing the edits. Once it is all finished he then types it up into a word ...

#181 rhansen55. The story of Anathem is more fleshed out. What I found a bit dissapointing in A Canticle For Leibowitz was that just when I was into the characters, and when I wanted to know what happened next, we skipped to the next section. The relation between the two is in the fact that ...

#125, divinenanny, which did you think was better and should I also read Anathem now? The only book that I can recall having a profound and lasting effect on me was Atlas Shrugged but so far A Canticle for Leibowitz is a good read.

... a world of SF that is not all galactic battles and evil aliens! I do recommend the book, I loved it (I read it because Anathem, which I loved, was supposedly a rip off of Canticle...).

Oh I know the feeling, busifer... I didn't want to finish Anathem, because I hated to not be reading it anymore. Now I want to find another book that gives me the same feeling.... If you come across one, let me know!

#44 - Anathem was REAL good, better than anything else I've read this year. But I read it in mid-December last year, so... not of this year. Hopefully something like that will pass my path this year too. It's not over yet!

I ended up enjoying anathem a great deal. It took me forever to get past the first 70-80 pages - but once past that initial hurdle i became, somewhat to my surprise, totally engrossed. It's almost as if NS took the literary equivalent of an inverse function of Snow Crash. Where SC was non ...

There are several books I've read this year that I've given the five stars: Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I loved both the writing and the whole idea of the story. I got it because of a great story about it in the Wired, and I wasn't disappointed. This book has also made me realize that I ...

WELL...i'll nominate the city and the city, anathem and the alchemy of stone Admittedly anathem would be a major project - i spent 6 months of stopping and starting..but once i got past the first 70 or so pages it turned into something strange and quite engrossing...but defn. SF.

You had me at "talky, academic". Anathem goes on the ever growing wishlist.

... Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. I picked up this book because I read a review earlier this year of Anathem (#7 of this year) that was kind of negative about Anathem, saying that it was a rip off of books like A Canticle for Leibowitz. Since I loved Anathem, ...

... books? I especially love the idea of a few people keeping knowledge safe from the ignorant masses (like in Leibowitz or in Anathem).

well, it took me a LOT longer than some to finish "Anathem" - i've had the book since Christmas, and made a couple of false starts. BUT I am very glad i persevered - and ended up savoring the book, reading it in 50-75 page chunks. NS is far more concerned with his characters than in prior ...

Okay, You've convinced me. Just consulted with Baron von Kindle. The deed is done. Anathem is purchased.

Just started reading A canticle for Leibowitz and I am really loving it so far. I picked it up because I loved Anathem, and read in a (not so good) review that Stephenson really just stole the idea from Miller. So, I picked up Miller, and what a good idea it proved to be. I am still loving ...

Ian, Whilst this year was a particularly bad year, only Anathem would have made my final ballot. And despite every one of the final ballot novels were by authors who have a personal following, things aren't as terrible as they seem when we plug back through the past few years. 2008 - Both ...

Anathem strikes me as a very unusual direction for NS. Both in style and substance it's almost an inverse function applied to snow crash. Where "Snow Crash" rock and rolled through your mind, "Anathem" is smooth and reflective. (Well, so far ~ 300 pages in) Even when the topics (discovery of ...

... good deal but the numerous puzzles were worked engagingly, for me, into the over long text. Maybe try a library copy of Anathem. I gave up half way through the Baroque cycle.

Back to attempting Anathem again. The other night i fell asleep shortly upon restart and then, again, after waking up ~ 2:am. Not altogether fair to NS as I was pretty physically tired as well. I THINK I was enjoying the book a good bit more the 2nd time round, but can't be positive. About to ...

bob vs Anathem, the sequel. Having given up after 50 pages the first time round. I've loved almost all the small beer press books i've run across.

Going to give Anathem a 2nd shot. Enough reputable sources insist it picks up dramatically after the first 100 pages and i gave up after ~ 50. Still Neal S. REALLY needs an editor these days. SnowCrash was pretty tight - and i'd guess the last time an editor was allowed sig. "damage."

I've been on a Neal Stephenson binge for the past month or so. I started with The Diamond Age audiobook, followed by Anathem and then I backtracked to his "breakout hit" Snow Crash. Then I got The Diamond Age in paperback, and listened to it again while reading along with some parts ...

I haven't been able to finish any of Neal Stephenson's output since The Diamond Age. Latest attempt was Anathem.

I am loving Anathem, although the apocalypse is not the central issue in the way it is in Canticle for Liebowitz. You might like Dune which is both the story of a society that has (over thousands of years) developed post-apocalyptically as well as focusing in on life on a desert planet (which ...

... Math is merely a branch of Philosophy. It uses the language of numbers to express ideas instead of words. I have had Anathem in my TBR pile for some time now and I think this thread has convinced me to move it to the top.

#9 - While I loved Cryptonomicon (and most of his other books, too) Anathem is is first real accomplished work, imho. The first is in dire need of an editor (ie. even on first read you realise you can just skip some parts and still not miss a beat/but I do love it), while the second even has a ...

Shanra, I'm severely math-impaired too and I loved Anathem. You don't need to know anything about math at all. It helps if you know some philosophy, though... And having travelled in Italy, by train, I well know the picture in #3 Trains (and buses) CAN be on strike ;P

I am currently readingNeal Stephenson's Anathem. I am really impressed. Maths, science, philosophy and science fiction adventure all rolled into one HUGE book. I just came across this sentence which I thought all the bibliophiles in here might get a kick out of. It made me do a double ...

Cancelled my bookswim account and sent back Anathem and More Information than you Require. I suppose I should get to work on adding reviews to these... katelisim, alcottacre: I really enjoyed Anathem. Stephenson's writing can get very detailed and "thick", and at times the book really slows down. Generally, I like Stephenson's style and the way he puts things down on paper, and ...
