Both have been in my sights for some time and I finally gave in to the siren call. Pig Did It was featured in a St. Patrick's Day display ... I enjoyed Netherland but feel it was perhaps a bit over-hyped, and even though O'Neill's prose was as elegant as any, every time he went on about cricket, my eyes would begin to glaze over and I was hit by a case of instant boredom. #98. I too loved The Plague of Doves. It was incredible. Netherland is on my short TBR list, and I'm sorry to hear it hasn't been great for you. ... ways, a perfect one-two reading punch I won't soon forget.
Yesterday I finished Joseph O'Neill's highly praised novel Netherland, and though I liked it quite a lot for its precisely insightful prose and overall style, the protagonist's fascination with the game of cricket became a bit ... #96, judylou, I am a big fan of Netherland too; it was one of my favorite books of last year, and very readable, so don't be put off by its length. By the way, I've recently seen it in paperback, and it looks much shorter. ... how Oates managed to write such a long book without losing the reader (me) once. Not many authors are capable of that.
Netherland is a book that I have had my eye on for a while. Its size has defeated me each time I have picked it up. I will definitely get to it one day.

Though Netherland is wonderful and permeated w/ the sense of dislocation that was part of the national collateral damage inflicted by 9/11. That said, I can recommend Netherland by Joseph O'Neill; the story takes place post-9/11 but is informed by the feelings of the characters afterwards rather than directly involving the attacks.

Rebecca, I always wonder the same about Australian books. No doubt you identified with the Netherland in a slightly different way to me but I certainly had no problems with it. As I said in your other thread, Amanda, Netherland was one of my favorite books last year, and I'm so glad you liked. It is very New York, and I always wonder whether that will translate for people who don't live here -- sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Great list!! I see that we shared quite a few books this year.
Netherland was very notable and a great read, Lush Life was not to my taste despite great narrative but my hubbie cannot stop singing its praises. The Miles book was good, but a bit too neurotic and alcohol bound ... ... fiction and less nonfiction than usual this year, and I read a lot more new fiction than I usually do.

I read the deservedly well-reviewed Netherland by Joseph O'Neill in just a few days. Beautiful writing, compelling, moving, and funny, perhaps especially so for me as a New Yorker.
