Unexpected War: Canada in Kahdahar tells about Canada's role in Afghanistan: how we got there, how our role there has evolved, and how we may (or may not) get out when expected.

More than that, though, this book is an examination of Canada's military and foreign policies. The discussion of how policy is made, the cultures and imperatives of the different parts of the bureaucracy (civilian and military), and of our political leaders, provides a rich context to help understand why Canada went to Afghanistan and why our soldiers are still there.
