I tend to agree with BookLizard. However, there are books on the original list which are memoirs, for example I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. That's not a novel, it's a true memoir. But the whole collection is so subjective, that it's hard to criticize. Mine would be quite different, as I'm ...

... and I feel that was such a waste of my precious reading time. If only another Agatha Christie could take its place. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is also an odd addition because it is an autobiography, not a novel.

#18 is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. I loved this autobiography that seemed so much more than its 244 pages! I laughed and cried and ached for her in this coming of age classic.

#126: I read Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings several years ago. Looks like I need to read A Song Flung Up to Heaven as well. Thanks for the recommendation. I do wonder why she needs 6 autobiographies, though . . .seems a bit many.

Just want to touch on four points: Absolutely loved I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. (but am not a huge fan of Maya Anjelou). Beautiful book, sorrowful subject. And Wonderlake, you have a great many very interesting on your TBR list for the year. Good luck with your challenge. Your pug ...

Finished I know why the caged bird sings a very good autobiography. Now reading It's raining in Mango, beautifully written but chops and changes and leaves out bits of the characters lives that I wanted to know about.

I've finished The wind-up bird chronicles and I know why the caged bird sings which is such a fabulous autobiography. Onto 2 half read books Tuesdays with Morrie and then It's Raining in Mango. Both were my handbag reads, but that didnt work very well so I hope to polish them off soon for ...

I know why the caged bird sings stacks up very well! It was written well before the self-help movement started. I think it was first published in 1969. I'm not sure that you could say that the theme was timely, perhaps timeless is the description I'd use. It is a coming of age story set in ...

I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings many many years ago and liked it a lot. There are parts a bit difficult to follow, due to the use of slang, but the story is fascinating and the writing excellent.

Thanks for this topic. I'm just about to read my first memoir/autobiography of the year, I know why the caged bird sings, and I think I'll take these questions into consideration. Also, I'm now reflecting on the two memoirs that I read last year My life as a Traitor and Eat, Pray, Love. ...
