Work detailsThe Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly (2008)
None. I enjoy Mr Connelly's books, particularly the Harry Bosch novels. However, I felt about this one, the same as I felt about The Lincoln Lawyer. It was a bit dull. In the Bosch books, it's "just another chapter before sleep". I didn't feel that way about this. Enjoyable enough but I think most US authors struggle with sympathetic defence lawyer characters, simply because the clients are pretty much always guilty and the reader loses sympathy with the person trying to get them off. Only Perry Mason ever got away with his clients always being innocent! Interesting to see Bosch from another point of view though and he's pretty scary. Another engaging novel from Mr. Connelly, driven by plot twists and featuring a haunted hero. I read this, the 2nd book in the Micker Haller series, out of sequence, having read the fourth book, [b:The Fifth Witness|9681098|The Fifth Witness (Mickey Haller, #4)|Michael Connelly|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1344264406s/9681098.jpg|14183705] first. Doing so, I think, diminished my enjoyment of [b:The Brass Verdict|2761626|The Brass Verdict (Mickey Haller, #2)|Michael Connelly|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1344264521s/2761626.jpg|2787335] because the courtroom descriptions were already familiar ground, and I already knew what happens in the back story about Haller's life and co-workers. But still, I found this a worthwhile read, particularly in the deft manner that the author mixes in subtle clues and red herrrings, while building to the expected surprise ending. Really enjoying this Mickey Haller series of books. Reminds me of John Grisham at his best. Looking forward to reading next in the series. Michael Connelly is one of my very favorite writers, so I was very excited to get his latest in my hands. "Starring" Mickey Haller (The Lincoln Lawyer), with second chair inhabited by Harry Bosch, this courtroom procedural is full of surprises and thoroughly enjoyable. Haller, fresh off a voluntary sabbatical from the practice of law, inherits the caseload of a friend of his who has been murdered. The biggest case involves a studio executive accused of murdering his wife and her lover, and Haller is off and running. The only real problem I had with this one is that having Bosch in a secondary role was disconcerting to me! Other than that -- a solid read! no reviews | add a review
