2. Sexing the Cherry, Jeanette Winterson I read my first Winterson, (Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit) several years ago. It was lent to me with several other "fluff" books--I expected it to be fluffy as well. Obviously, I was mistaken. Great book. I read The Passion for a class ...

I'm looking for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson, hopefully in a pocket paperback edition, so it can fit in a stocking.

Winterson's best is her first: Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is still just blindingly brilliant. Sexing the Cherry is great for a group read because it polarizes people like there's no tomorrow. Never read any Kathy Acker that I can recall. Where do I report for re-education?

35. Oranges are not the only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson, UK, 1985 I remember hearing Jeanette Winterson on the radio, how charismatic and interesting she seemed and her needing to hide novels, classics under the mattress from her mother as she was growing up. No book but the Bible was allowed ...

Here's another one for the reader who wants something less dreary than the standard 1001 book: Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson. I wouldn't call it "uplifting" but it's not grim, and there are many laugh out loud funny bits.

Hi Nickelini. I also read Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit recently. Liked it a lot more than I expected to and found it funny, as you did. Found the fables a bit of an interruption, but didn't hate them.

I've just finished Jeanette Winterson's Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit - it was completely different from what I thought it would be. I didn't expect it to be so funny, full of supernatural elements and the writing so smart and playful, it was all the more moving as it never thinks of being ...
