LOL! Okay, I really want to read Chains by (guess) Laurie Halse Anderson. Here's the description:
In 1776, Isabel is a young slave (about 11?). She and her little sister, Ruth, live in Rhode Island and Isabel dreams of the day they will be free. Their master, Miss Finch, has promised ...

What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
Chains and Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
Walter Dean Meyers has written numerous books set in different historical periods.
For fun, girlie, romantic ...
I enjoyed Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. It's YA, takes place mostly in NYC during the year 1776. You might find it in the Children's section of the bookstore, but thematically I think it belongs in the YA section and it also should have great crossover appeal for adults.
#140, #143 I loved both these books too.
#138 I have her Chains out from the library now, it gets good reviews.
I'll second Chains ; it's a very good book. Ann Rinaldi has also written a lot of good young adult historical fiction that I enjoyed when I was your age.
How about Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. It is about a girl who is enslaved during the American Revolution. Should be entirely appropriate and interesting for an 8th grader.

The year is 1776. Isabel's owner, Miss Finch, has died. She left a will freeing Isabel and her sister Ruth, but Miss Finch's nephew is in a hurry and the lawyer is in Boston -- unreachable given the current unrest. He sells the girls to a couple who live ...

Oh! and I havent read Speak, but I have read Chains , by the same author...
