This book explores the relationship of Robert Dudley and Queen Elizabeth I in the first two years of succession. Dudley, a married man to Amy Robert, is the most unpopular man in England. He'd known the Queen in childhood and supported her when she was in the Tower at the same time he was incarcerated. HIs ambition was to be King England and France by marrying Elizabeth. The suspicious circumstance of Amy's death/murder rules out his eligibility. ( ) Queen Elizabeth I is known for being the Virgin Queen so to read a book that demonstrates her affection for a man while her advisors recommend she marries a Prince is extremely interesting. It makes this famous figure head seem more human and asks the question was she just a girl in love with the wrong man? I finally made it to the end of this audio book, but I really don't know why I even bothered. The Virgin's Lover was far less engaging than Gregory's White Queen....partly because White Queen covered a more interesting time for the monarchy, but partly because it was at least twice as long as necessary. And while I know it is true that history suggests Queen Elizabeth loved Robert Dudley, I hardly think the pitiful, lovesick woman depicted in this novel could have held the throne for forty-plus years. no reviews | add a review
