I've only read Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven which I thoroughly enjoyed. In The Pile I have Into Thin Air. What do you think - should I move it up? Re: Under the Banner of Heaven. I enjoyed the book as much as you did. As to Mitchell and Smart. I didn't read Krakauer's theory the same way you did exactly, though I can see that such a reading might be possible. Any and all popular books written by Mormons - Lost Boys or Saints by Orson Scott Card, about Mormons - Under the Banner of Heaven or No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith or even about the religion - The Book of Mormon or even something like Riders of the Pur ... I read and enjoyed Under the Banner of Heaven and listened to the audio version about the young man who died in Alaska - however, the football and army connection has no appeal to me, or many non-Americans, I would think. Just too culturally based.

True, he does write well about Alaska and climbing mountains, etc., but his latest book called Under the Banner of Heaven was about the Mormon religion and the fundamentalist fanatics that have plagued it since its beginnings. Today when I got home from work I started Under the Banner of Heaven which my book club selected. Crazy! ... If you haven't already read it, I heartily recommend Eiger Dreams! I think I like it even better than Into Thin Air. Under the Banner of Heaven is an important, thoughtful book -- I still think of it often.

7. Maste ... Just finished Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer yesterday; one of the more disturbing non-fiction books I've ever read.
Next I'll be returning to Little,Big by John Crowley (now that my 2008 reading challenge is over and I can take my time). ... it over the holiday period. In any case, it was quite interesting. I decided to read it as the previous book I had read was Under the Banner of Heaven.
After that I needed some light relief so am now reading Made in America by Bill Bryson. ... really pretty good once I got past the confusion over narrative voice changes. As far as the history bits go, I preferred Under the Banner of Heaven for that stuff; here, it just bored me until it got personal.

100. The King's Daughter by Sandra Worth. Elizabeth of York has the rare distinction of having been the daughter of a king, sister of a king, niece of a king, wife of a king and mother of a king. But ... Great review of Under the Banner of Heaven. I really like Krakauer's books. Into Thin Air is fabulous. So is Into the Wild. It has been suggested to me (though I haven't done so yet) that Anatoli Boukreev's account of the Mt. Everest disaster (The Climb) be read as a companion piece ... I also read The Climb and enjoyed it. I have read Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and listened to Into the Wild on tape. My reactions to the last two were outrage and mystification, respectively. One day I'll get to Into Thin Air.
A survival book I found hard to put down is Aliv ... ... If you are interested in non-fiction on the LDS church and the practice of plural marriage, I just finished and enjoyed Under the Banner of Heaven by Krakauer. Fair minded book I thought and very informative. Also, The Mormon Murders which also covers the rich and unusual history of the L ... ... in that case, it seemed more to be an ego trip than a deliberate attempt to see how far they could go. I'd also recommend Under the Banner of Heaven for reading. Has anyone else read Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer? I just finished it this morning. *shudder* I'm glad I read it but I am still reeling. :o/
