I read it a few years ago. ... and was punished for it! ;-) Learned my lesson, won't do it again! Next books up (mostly because they're library books): White Teeth, Wives and Daughters and The Hour I First Believed. Thanks again for your lists! Finished Tipping the Velvet and found the beginning wonderful and much of the rest annoying. I'm onto White Teeth and have discovered that Zadie Smith is like a funny Salman Rushdie! ... and On the Road by Kerouac, both of which I get a hard time for.

I liked Small Island, Bel Canto, and The Stone Diaries, too. Read Brick Lane and White Teeth several years back and recall liking them but they haven't stuck with me as much as the others. Inheritance of Loss was just so-so for me.

livrecache, I liked Fight Club too, although Palahniu ... KimB, I did like Bel Canto and White Teeth very much, my nudge goes to both of those. We've got a few matching TBR books for Orange July, and I was hoping to read Purple Hibiscus, Brick Lane and Gilgamesh (plus some others, Everyman's Rules looks mighty interesting too, but the others ... ... Senses--good, but kind of just another Amy Tan.
Brick Lane--really enjoyed this one, but the ending was a bit off.
White Teeth--loved it!
The Inheritance of Lost--I also gave up on it. I got about 75 pages in and the characters weren't grabbing me and nothing much was happening.

Sorry 2008 - Bookring -T ... ... for the past 10 minutes, but the only book I could find so far that is available on Kindle and not in your library is White Teeth by Zadie Smith, but I'm not sure if this is your cup of tea or not. Oh, I did love White Teeth when it came out, I thought it was quite marvellous. I can see what you mean by the "flattening", though.
The Fern Tattoo is going to be read soon, but KLL has requested The Master and Margarita to be read quickly (if at all possible) so she can take it overseas ... Just finished White Teeth as part of my slow trek through the 1001 ranges, and book number 5 of 10 of my SIY challenge. (I just might squeeze through, this time!) As a modern read after so many C19th and C20th classics, I actually didn't enjoy it all that much. The story was entertaining but I ... ... anyone ever read Notes from Underground? I'm currently doing something very atypical of me - reading two books at once (White Teeth before bed, Notes from Underground via DailyLit) - but I'm really enjoying my obligatory Russian for this SIY quarter.

Like you, Miss-Owl, I'd put A Clockwork Orange and The Lord of the Flies in the same way. My 17-year-old ... ... brutal read - I guess I enjoyed it in the same way I 'enjoyed' A Clockwork Orange, if that makes any sense.

I got to read this for a class. I don't think I would've found out how good it was otherwise. How can this monumentous book be summed up in a few short sentences? I, too, loved White Teeth. I had listened to it on audio. The narrator (sorry I don't have that person's name) related the story with pitch perfect accents. The result was a story that was totally hilarious!

I thought White Teeth, on the other hand, was a wonderful book.
And the one in the middle, The Autograph Man was utter, utter crap - Lady Z getting ahead of herself, so to speak. I did like On Beauty, so I tried another one of her books White Teeth and quit about half through. Just too boring. ... published in 1994 and I don't believe any updated editions have been issued. Zadie Smith didn't publish her first novel, White Teeth, until 2000, so there's no way she could be included. Louise Erdrich novel, Tracks is listed in this category (one up from the bottom).

I actually really enjoyed White teeth but can see what others mean as I did find it to be a bit cliched in parts.
The historian was very very good until the end which I thought was completely OTT ... Just finished the last book in Ted Dekker's The Circle Trilogy, White. Anything by Zadie Smith or Monica Ali will have cross-cultural themes...I particularly recommend Brick Lane and White Teeth. On Beauty was the Zadie Smith Pulitzer book. I enjoyed it enough that I am now reading her White Teeth. Two families that the dads are rivals, but the moms become friends, and the children...well you will just have to read it to see how their relationships with eachother are, and the ... Red Dragon by Thomas Harris I actually went out and met Zadie Smith at a book signing. I had really enjoyed White Teeth and I had The Autograph Man on my TBR list. I heard great things about it and I started it with great ferver I loved the writing style, but the story just went nowhere! I got just past the halfway ... I quit in the middle of On Beauty too. I loved Smith's debut novel White Teeth but have been less than happy with her two subsequent novels. ... finish which had me enthralled. I like Lionel Shriver's style so will be looking for more of her books to read.
White Teeth was excellent. The characters were beautifully written and the storyline was quite complex. Its a story about friendship and how difference can be uniting. I ... Midnight's Children, White Teeth ... Smith (May): A literary novel: character-driven and thoroughly entertaining. Already a Zadie Smith fan (based on her White Teeth), I didn’t know what to expect with this one, as I had read a pan of it on LibraryThing, and the essay-like title made me wonder. In any case, I now feel it ... I quite enjoyed White Teeth. Chacun a son gout. I'm in three different localities (and times in fact!) Russia - The Master and Margarita, England - White Teeth and France - La Princesse de Cleves (in English). ... other sections would, if I was interested, also be the places I would begin if I wanted to follow up on Invisible Man or White Teeth. This is not segregation, it is just another form of genre categorisation (and a pinch of good business sense; I bought lots more......).

Not sure this is high literature, but it's so compelling and human, it doesn't really matter.
Diane Rehm interviewed Smith when "On Beauty" came out in 2005. Listen here: ... ... go as far as saying I liked the book nor that another one by Z.S will be welcomed with open arms but it was better than White teeth and it does deserve a second reading. (What am I saying?)

lead me to believe this novel might not quite as "glorious" as all the rave reviews in the blurb. I have read White Teeth previously, but it made no lasting impression on me. Maybe I should cut to the chase and select a Salman Rushdie work instead? ... that I am) -- I can't do this two books at once thing that some of you seem to do.
lizzier -- felt the same way about White Teeth -- not in hurry, but haven't ruled out On Beauty . . she is so tangential -- and I am realizing alot of her schtick is stolen from Salman Rushdie ... fanclub until there's a little more evidence of the editiorial red pen. Now I come to think about it, I felt the same about White teeth.
Maybe I'll side step into something other. I read White Teeth this week. I enjoyed much of it especially the character of Samad and his angst. But I remain a bit confused on some of her points -- what exactly does she think about the immigrant experience?, mulit-racial background? Is the secret to happiness letting go of your past or ... The first two-thirds of the book aren´t too bad. Smith turns the self-consciousness of her (presumably) white readers back on itself, which is a neat trick, and she´s funny and erudite throughout. Then the book begins to drift. The reunion of the novel´s ... ... this book. I found that I had no sympathy for the characters, nor did I particularly care what happened to them. I have White Teeth on my TBR list, so I haven't given up hope yet.

For some reason, White Teeth came alive for me. I found the characters very funny and engaging. I recommended this book highly to others. I was intrigued by the fact that the author abd the protagonist were biracial. I wanted to see how this fact played out in the book.

I gave up entirely about half-way through. I've been really disappointed in Zadie Smith whose first novel, White Teeth, I found just great. I didn't like her next novel (blocking out the name of it), although I forced my way through its entirety.
