... reading The God of Small Things. Too many similies. Perhaps somewhat controversially, I also wish I'd stopped reading Year of Wonders. I disliked what she did to the character of the rector in the villiage and I objected to the ending. It was hard to reconcile the strongly self-sufficient, ...

50. The Year of Wonders (TBR List)--Hurrah, I made 50! Enjoyable novel set in England during the Plague, but I found several things about the novel unbelievable, which was irksome. For example, the heroine seemed remarkably modern-minded, and the epilogue was very far-fetched. Still enjoyable, ...

... completely bowled over by People of the Book either. I did like bits of it, but I didn't think it was as strong a book as A Year of Wonders or March which I enjoyed more. I didn't think she handled the transition between the different people who owned the books over time well.

... cover - the one with the woman poised over an old book, with a butterfly fluttering above it. My (also British) cover of Year of Wonders is lovely too - a dark country scene, deep teal green, black silhouetted trees, with shiny silvery script for the title. Perfect for the book.

... It was never explained how the dreadful mother could have held such sway over the situation. I thoroughly enjoyed Year of Wonders and thought that March was a tremendous book. I'll be first in line when Brooks' next book comes out.

Hi Mark - I loved Year of Wonders - it was my first Brooks' book and one of the reasons I joined this group read! I would recommend you hunt through you TBR pile for it. Sign me up for the next group read. As for Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie is a new to me author (I keep meaning ...

... writer, she pulls off these different places and people and voices brilliantly. I didn't enjoy it as much as Year of Wonders but I think that was partially because of the way that while that novel was about people pulling together to survive disaster, this book shows how readily ...

Cushla, I haven't read Year of Wonders or March, although I do plan on hunting down the former (and probably the latter as well) soon! I enjoyed the historical and the detail part of the writing much more than the main plot--but that is completely consistent with my reading tastes. :) ...

Having read Year of Wonders already, it strikes me that Brooks has done a wonderful job of portraying the helplessness of a desperate situation yet again in Lola's story. In Year of Wonders the horrors of the plague became almost commonplace, just one more death amongst many, one more child, ...

I started Year of Wonders today. It took me a little while to get into it, but now I find it vivid and moving. Still working on The Stones Cry Out, my night time book. It's a sad story, but I really like the writing style.

By day, I'm in 17th century England with Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. The plague is upon us. By night, I'm still in post-war Japan with The Stones Cry Out. We are feeling very, very anguished.

... through. I'm still working on my nighttime book, The Stones Cry Out. It's quite poignant. My new day time book is Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.

This year I really liked two books by Geraldine Brooks March and Year of Wonders March tells the story of the father from Little Women and gives the reader a picture of an aspect of the American Civil War. Year of Wonders is a story of a woman in a village in England that closed itself ...

... I was the only person on the planet who didn't love Cold Mountain! I couldn't finish it. I also thought the ending of Year of Wonders was absurd. Ruined the book.

I did enjoy Year of Wonders, but the main character, Anna, is not really a prime mover for any of the events in the novel - she reacts to events rather than causing them. So although we do get a quite vivid, I think, insider's view of what it is like to live in a plague town - she nurses many ...

About comparing Year of Wonders and March... that easy the first is crummy, the second is really good... or is it the other way around? :o) It's interesting that so many readers seem to like one a lot (I prefer March) and not like the other much at all. What was the difference? They are both ...

I loved Year of Wonders while I was reading it, but it hasn't stuck with me the way March is doing. I can't help but wonder whether I would have found more in Year of Wonders if I had written a comparison review of it and whichever novel I read immediately before or after it. LeHack, your ...

I've just finished Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague and for me, I much preferred March. I am unsure as to whether this is only because I loved Little Women when I was younger. I really liked the flashback sort of thing that was going on with March and the slight references to Little W ...

Year of Wonders and Growing Old Disgracefully finished this morning; I'm too sick ('flu) to think about what to tackle next so it might well be a Dick Francis re-read. (Reading a book about plague while monitoring your own temperature isn't the best start to a Monday.)

Funny, I had just the opposite opinion. I thought that although Year of wonders had great touches, it was only OK overall. I found March to be pretty powerful. Both are a bit contrived, with anachronistic personalities. But, that seems hard to avoid with historical fiction (I haven't really ...

I agree with amandameale, I loved Year of Wonders, but really disliked March. I found the main character tepid and the story contrived. It may very well have been based on fact, but it wasn't alive for me.

I read Geraldine Brooks' first novel Year of Wonders and enjoyed it. Then I saw a fascinating interview with her on Australian TV so raced out to buy March. I hated it, but apparently I'm the only person in the world who did.

I enjoyedYear of Wonders and found Geraldine Brooks fascinating on the Andrew Denton interview. So, I raced out and bought March, read about one quarter of it and was bored, bored, bored. I couldn't believe it won the Pultizer Prize. Anyhow, after reading these good reports, I shall try again.

... by Philip Ziegler called The Black Death. There is also an interesting fiction book by Geraldine Brooks called The Year of Wonders about how a small English village dealt with the plague. It is based on reality, the village is studied because of who died and who didn't.

I preferred Year of Wonders, which I adored, to March which I found disappointing. Mr March annoyed the hell out of me. I still love Little Women and for that matter What Katy Did etc. Happy memories from childhood perhaps more than an appreciation for fine literature! I regularly re-read T ...

I've been to Eyam in England, where Year of Wonders is set, and can't wait to get into it!

I enjoyed Year of Wonders, and I even liked the ending! Although I do see how it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the book, but it was a fascinating story nonetheless. I read March a little while ago, and found the main character rather annoying. (I gave it to my Mum for her birthday, and ...

Year of Wonders is one of my favourite books - aside from what I consider an odd ending. It just didn't seem 'in character' to me. Read March earlier this year and enjoyed it, but not nearly as much.

year of wonders is one of my most favorite historical fiction books...I tell everyone about it. I have also enjoyed her older book Nine Parts of Desire and her newest novel March. I am going to find Down the Common today. Thanks for the recomendation.

I just finished Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks---loved it. And now I'm starting If on a winter's night a traveler by Italo Calvino---I'm intrigued and think it might be one of the most unique books I've ever read.

For those of you who loved Year of Wonders you might also like Down the Common. Both of these sure gave me some perspective on what a real hard life would be like. The Thrall's Tale was an eyeopener, too. Some of my favorite semi-historical reads are The Bull from the Sea and The Kin ...

Year of Wonders is one of my favourite reads, although I though the ending was a bit implausible. I didn't quite see it as 'in character'... Had the wonderful opportunity to visit Eyam last fall. I was in Nottingham for a business trip and extended my stay to go out to Derbyshire where we ...

Hi jbdl, I agree. I enjoyed Year of Wonders more too. However, I did find that once I was able to put my feminist inclinations to the side and read March as a portrait of a character who is very true to his time - self righteous, missionary, selfish and conceited - I appreciated the ...
