In this piece of realistic fiction, Henry and Mudge work together to be sneaky spies, attempting to crack a secret code. Throughout this adventure, the friends try different methods of accomplishing their spying tasks, while in reality, Henry is the only one that is doing any work. Mudge, the dog, is only along for the ride. Regardless of the fact that Mudge is unhelpful, the two friends have a great time learning how to become stealthy spies.

I have a lot of respect for Henry's mom. In some ways I want to be her, with a big porch & yard & trees, and long dresses and bare feet - but I don't want a huge slobbery dog, thank you. ( )

Henry and Mudge are so much fun to read about! Carefully crafted simplicity in the story telling as well as the illustrations. A great book for the beginning reader. ( )

Henry gets a spy kit and he and Mudge go around spying. They find and crack a code by the garbage, and soon Henry is leaving and cracking codes every day. Eventually, he meets the other person leaving codes- another little boy with his dog. They start a spy club together. ( )
