Great cozy, again, from Elaine Viets. Some very important issues are presented about being a single parent, and there were times I actually laughed out loud as well; great sense of humor in her stories. Also, at the end of the book, she gives great shopping tips and some helpful websites as well. I highly recommend this series to all cozy mysteries lovers especially those of you who enjoy reading books without nasty curse words and raunchy sex scenes. ( )

Mystery shopper Josie Marcus is caught in a huge lie. She has told her nine-year-old daughter that her dad, Josie’s husband, is dead. Truth is that Josie and Nate Weekler were never married and he’s in jail in Canada for dealing drugs, not dead. That is, until he turns up on Josie’s doorstep looking for his daughter and making threats he’ll take Amelia away from her. Nate has really gone to seed since Josie last saw him before their daughter was born, looking decades older than his mid-30s age. And he’s drinking heavily.
On the job front, Josie is asked to mystery shop two Christmas-year-around stores, one of which is owned by the ex-wife of Josie’s beau Mike. Doreen is a real piece of work and her store “Naughty and Nice” features pornographic Christmas ornaments. What’s worse is that Doreen is forcing her 14-year-old daughter Heather to work in the store. Heather’s temperament is never pleasant, and her work at the store makes it even worse.

Soon two people area dead after eating sweets at one of the stores Josie shopped --. and Josie seems to be a “person of interest” to the police. Thanks heavens she has a great friend in Alyce, who – without so much as a law degree – can convince the cops she’s Josie’s bulldog attorney.

Although my favorite of Elaine Viets’s mysteries are those in her “dead-end job” series featuring Helen Hawthorne, Josie is beginning to grow on me. She’s a sweetie, more than a tad inept when it comes to men, and a wonderful mom to her daughter, who’s nine going on twenty one. My only complaint about Murder with All the Trimmings is that Heather is a real toilet-tongue, unleashing a staccato burst of f-bombs at one point in the book. It just seems out of place to me, even though Heather is told in no uncertain terms that her language is unacceptable.

Readers can, however, count on Elaine Viets for smooth, seemingly effortless writing, a plot that moves along nicely (other than a first murder that occurs more than 100 pages into the book), a sympathetic heroine and a great cast of secondary characters. Even having a child play a prominent role in the book – something that usually annoys me – isn’t so bad when Amelia is herself a terrific, strong character.
