#1 Affinity by Sarah Waters

Oh, I love lists of good books! Happy reading! MarianV -- I have loved all of Sarah Waters' books. Especially Fingersmith, Tipping the Velvet and Affinity (and The Night Watch). Also, I am doing a play, so I have read The Beaux' Stratagem more times than I wish to count. (I play, get this....a chaplain! Who is also a scoundrel. THAT is a real stretch for me.) Oh, I read Affinity just a few weeks ago, a marvellous read. Managed to get a Virago in this month. Affinity by Sarah Waters. Enjoyed this one. Not quite as much as Fingersmith but pretty close. Just finished Affinity by Sarah Waters. Really good book weaving the stories of Selena, a spiritual medium imprisoned for fraud and Margaret a 'lady' who is a prison visitor. Recommended.

... Wow you're motoring through the books! I have Affinity, sent from a very generous LT member (norht4me), but haven't read it yet. Or any Sarah Waters...
And thanks for the review of the Yiddish Policeman's Union Now I want to read it! I've seen it many many times in bookshops but have ... 57. Affinity by Sarah Waters
A library book I happened across, with much glee. She's very popular, so it's a rare occasion to ... ... of the Art of Death series is a bit dull at times. But apparently #3 is excellent, so it's worth sticking with.
Finished Affinity and really loved it. Highly recommended (as are all of Sarah Waters' books!).
Just started The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. Oooh, livrecache, I just finished Affinity last night and was wishing I had a copy of Spook to re-read (I borrowed a library copy a year or two ago). It'd be interesting to revisit the section on the Victorian mediums (media?) after my little gothic novel. Must see if I can track it down at the ... lindsacl, I read Cold Comfort Farm recently. It was a great romp!
I'm currently reading Affinity by Sarah Waters. Enjoying it immensely. In 19th century London, in Sarah Waters' Affinity. ... Thinking by Joan Didion. Both are autobiography/memoir books.
ETA: But I am being distracted by Sarah Waters' Affinity at the moment, so it'll be a couple of days before I get onto this one. Can't seem to work Affinity into this challenge! ... Oz VBB and both it and The Discomfort Zone are autobiographical, but I've been rather distracted by Sarah Waters' Affinity which is another brilliant Victorian pastiche of a romp. I'll get onto The Year of Magical Thinking as soon as I've finished Waters' novel. My book group chose this to read. I did not even attempt reading it as I could not get through the Tipping the Velvet or Affinity. My guess is that I am the only lesbian out there who does not love Sarah Waters. teelgee, you crack me up.
I'm in 19th century London, in Sarah Water's Affinity. Picked up Sarah Waters' first book Affinity from the library a couple of weeks ago, and am scrambling to read it in case I have to return it this weekend! (Chances are I'll be able to renew, but you never can tell...) ... various essays about his childhood and family. But I didn't feel like non-fiction last night, so I picked up Sarah Waters' Affinity as a bedside read.
I was, of course, hooked from the very start on her gothic victorian pastiche. So I stayed up far too late reading, and now *yawn*. ... I need a Yiddish dictionary though.
Am disappointed in the lack of gay characters though, I may not be able to hop onto Affinity next. But I've got another good bounce in mind...
Oooh, is the fun in the reading, or in the planning of the bounces? :) ... Michael Chabon are gay or not (there almost always is, but this time he might buck the trend), because then I can hop onto Affinity which I picked up at the library last weekend and have been looking forward to! I felt that way about her last one The Night Watch. A great book but it didn't suck me in like Fingersmith, Affinity, or Tipping the Velvet. I'm in love with anything written in or about the Victorian era though so maybe that's why I prefer them to Night Watch, which was set in WW2 London (as ... ... I had to buy/read it.
She's a great writer and I had no trouble finishing it, but I did not love it. I also didn't love Affinity (which I thought was worse) so maybe she can be a little patchy.
Did anyone love it? ... know how you go to the library and never find any specific book you're looking for? Not today. (I also got Sarah Water's Affinity, Jose Saramago's The Double, and Rebecca West's Sunflower.) And when I went to pick up my book for my reading group from the bookshop, they had Ryszard Kapusc ... ... find three books on my wishlist. So I'll be starting Andrea Levy's Small Island tonight, and have Sarah Water's Affinity on Mt TBR (neither a 1001 or an Orange book, but she's such a marvellous writer), along with The Double by Jose Saramago (a 1001 book). Sarah Waters is a brilliant storyteller. Fingersmith, Affinity, Tipping the Velvet and The Night Watch, are all brilliant novels. I think Fingersmith and Affinity are her two best, but none will disappoint. She is a must read for me. All her books are very seductive and possess deep ... ... perfect example of the way Waters writes to make her characters far more than they appear to be within the plot.
I loved Affinity, which I thought was interesting from beginning to end, although I understand it’s classified as “gothic”. OK, bring me more Sarah Waters gothic. But I ... Started Fingersmith today, read by Juanita McMahon, who did an excellent job on Sarah Waters' earlier novel Affinity. At 20 discs, it'll keep me occupied for a while. I know you didn't ask me, but Tipping the Velvet was my second favorite, followed by Affinity and The Night Watch :) I've not yet read The Little Stranger, but it's on the shelf, waiting for me...
I finished Affinity on my break and I've gotta say, I'm not too impressed. Waters's prose is as lovely as always, and I'm in awe of her ability to capture the feel of whichever time period she's working in, but I saw the ending coming a mile off.
I plan to start V For Vendetta by Alan Moor ... ... at all what I wanted to read on Monday morning. I've put it aside for a little while in favour of Sarah Waters's Affinity. In no particular order but all recommended.
Affinity by Sarah Waters
Eva Trout by Elizabeth Bowen
Crossing To Safety by Wallace Stegner
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje Just finished reading Affinity. This is the story of Margaret, a very sensitive and intelligent woman who is imprisoned by family obligations and societal norms. She becomes a "Lady Visitor" at Millbank Prison where she meets and becomes obsessed with Selina, a spiritual medium.
This is a book ... ... this year I'm employed. Work sure does interfere with a good book.
So Here's what I've done so far this year:
1. Affinity by Sarah Waters
Fingersmith was one of my favorites of the past several years. Liked Tipping the Velvet as well, so was happy to find this on the used shelf. ... ... he couldn't save her. 3) Illyria and Spike have a strange maybe even sexual relationship going on.
I started reading Affinity last night. Hi Judylou,
I've just found your thread and am enjoying catching up on your reading.
I have Fingersmith and Affinity by Sarah Waters to read - hope I like her as much as everyone else on LT seems to!
I'm going to add A Complicated Kindness and The Great Arch to my library list. The ... ... but Juanita McMahon did an excellent job on an unabridged reading I listened to last year of Sarah Waters' novel Affinity. My library also has a copy of her reading Waters' The Night Watch which I've just reserved.
Most UK listeners to recordings of American novels with female ... ... have known better.
There are enough twists and turns, unexpected developments, to satisfy the most devoted reader of Affinity and Fingersmith--in fact, more so. Make no mistake, this is a sophisticated book. You see what the four protagonists are going through and you feel helpless--an ... ... so much that I had to add Caleb Carr's first novel, The Alienist, to my Historical list. (It replaced Affinity by Sarah Waters, which I may add back on in the future). I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the other book, but it was still awesome. LT review Sibylle.Night in Virago Modern Classics : What Virago Are You Reading - Part V (Feb 4, 2009, 8:24am) I've just finished Affinity by Sarah Waters. It was a haunting and complex read, and excellent from beginning to end. I saw the adaptation before reading the book and I think the adaptation was particularly good, it's a difficult book to adapt, so much anxiety and claustrophobia happens due to ... ... the second book as I heard there was a huge cliffhanger at the end of Inkspell.
In other news, I've just finished Affinity by Sarah Waters. It was a haunting and complex read, and excellent from beginning to end. I think I'll start The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall whenever I ... Julie, I enjoyed Affinity, both the book and the TV production.
bunnybee, Fingersmith is my favourite so far too. Good to hear from you Sibylle.Night - Affinity how wonderful and I just loved the loved the BBC production screened over the New Year. Anyone else seen/ know that one?
A propros of having been to your blog KJ Rowling is receiving a legion d'honneur .... mmmm ... we may have to agree to ... I am now starting Affinity by Sarah Waters, the last book by her I haven't read. It's not a VMC but it's a Virago nonetheless!
Hope you're all okay, I haven't had time to come and chat here for a while! ... and the villains won't be so one-dimensional, and the bookbinding and collecting part will be expanded).
I am now starting Affinity by Sarah Waters, the last book by her I haven't read. She's one of my favourite authors. ... the book."
Ocassionally I find that a book carries a big enough surprise to really floor me (End of the Affair or Affinity) but I am not averse to peeking at the last few pages to see how it turns out, and if I don't like it, I just put the book down. (I did that with some of Anne Rice' ... #4. The night watch by Sarah Waters
Not excellent like Fingersmith and after that Affinity (also, what happened to Victorian England *pout*), but still an incredibly good read. I'm definitely a Sarah Waters fan. Onward to my next book, Tipping the velvet, the only unread Waters I still ... ... avoid that book for a while longer yet.
I never read Fingersmith, but pushed it onto several other people. I did read Affinity, which I thought was brilliant. And also The night watch, which I expected more from.
KimB, I remember the Canberra fires. I was in Vietnam at the time, and I ... ... the Velvet, which I really enjoyed, though think fingersmith is her best work. Am upset I missed the TV version of Affinity. ... talent--all three of her books are top-notch. Her first, Tipping the Velvet probably remains my favorite so far, with Affinity breathing down its neck. There isn't much to choose between them in quality--I just really liked the picaresque quality of the first novel and the really ... Just finished Affinity by Sarah Waters, the weakest of three I've read by her.
Just started Moby Dick I read half of it twenty years ago and never finished. Time to do it again. Beautiful so far. Just finished watching the Andrew Davies adaptation of Affinity by Sarah Waters - beautiful, haunting, wonderful. A must watch if you haven't seen it!! #13,
Valerie, I have a used paperback Affinity that you are welcome to, if you'd like it. I finished it last month and don't think it's one that I'd re-read, much as I enjoyed it! ... llett

132. Affinity by Sarah Waters. Ye gods, yet another terrific book from Waters! I am NOT a fan of the Gothic genre, but Waters has written a beauty that has the most superb twist in it. She's doneher research abut women in victorian prisons, and it's powerful stuff.

I'll be watching for your review. :-) Now that I have Internet access again and am about through almost catching up, I must trot over to amazon and buy Affinity and Fingersmith.
