As the thread started out that way, I'll kick off with anything by Sarah Waters - Affinity is wonderful, as is Tipping the Velvet. You might also try 98 Reasons For Being, Arthur and George, The Unburied, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Gre ... Well, so far, these are the top contenders:
Affinity 4
The Finishing School 5
Huckleberry Finn 6
An Equal Music is also intriguing because it has such unequal nudges, but I think I won't start with that one.
I have to confess I did read Huckleberry Finn far back in my ... Affinity, definitely - a gripping, moving read. Here's a nudge (and a big one) for Affinity - very different and utterly un-put-down-able, and a non-nudge for Mistress of the Art of Death though admittedly, I didn't actually get to finish it because it was so terrible. ... it is a good mystery (though not an excellent one, mind you), The Finishing School because I love Muriel Spark, and Affinity because I like Sarah Waters' style. I'm nudging Affinity. It's darker than Sarah Water's other work, but just as compelling and it brings the darker side of life in Victorian alive brilliantly.

I think I may read Affinity in October - isn't it a ghost story to get me ready for Halloween? ... - I recently read A Suitable Boy and loved it. It goes faster than its bulk would have you believe.
