The classic lesbian coming-of-age novel, Annie on My Mind (1982) by Nancy Garden, which was just re-issued a couple years ago in a 25th anniversary paperback edition that includes an interview with the author. Still excellent, though some contemporary readers may find it a little bit dated.

... lesbian book from before the 90's I read that wasn't totally depressing. If you're willing to read Young Adult books, Annie On My Mind is another absolute classic. (But my favourite YA lesbian book is Hello, Groin for being realistic but not depressing and with a literary touch!) I'm ...

I finished Annie on My Mind and I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You, and I'm two essays away from finishing Reading in Bed: Personal Essays on the Glories of Reading. There are far to many books started but on the back burner at the moment.

Good Moon Rising is great! For a long time when I was in high school my library didn't have a copy of Annie on My Mind and Good Moon Rising was the only YA book with lesbian characters that I could get my hands on. I must have borrowed it a million times!
