The classic lesbian coming-of-age novel, Annie on My Mind (1982) by Nancy Garden, which was just re-issued a couple years ago in a 25th anniversary paperback edition that includes an interview with the author. ... When I was a teenager I really liked coming of age lgbt fiction. Not many vampires, but Annie on My Mind is a great book. Nancy Garden, Annie on My Mind

PS - I loved Annie on my mind! ... lesbian book from before the 90's I read that wasn't totally depressing.
If you're willing to read Young Adult books, Annie On My Mind is another absolute classic. (But my favourite YA lesbian book is Hello, Groin for being realistic but not depressing and with a literary touch!)

I love Lauren Myracle and her first novel, Kissing Kate is about a gay teen girl. There's also Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden. Anything by Alex Sanchez, too - the Rainbow Boys series and The God Box got great reviews. Oooh and M or F? by Lisa Papad ... ... my favorite book PERIOD, but I wouldn't consider it (at least unabridged) to be YA.
I'm also very fond of Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind.

Two classics of lesbian literature: Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah and, for young adults, Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind. Personally, I much prefer Annie on My Mind, but Patience and Sarah is of such historic importance that I can't omit mentioning it.

Annie on my Mind is a classic and very sweet. I haven't read Annie on my Mind, but I have read George Washington, Spymaster. I haven't read Heart-Shaped Box but I've read Annie On My Mind I finished Annie on My Mind and I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You, and I'm two essays away from finishing Reading in Bed: Personal Essays on the Glories of Reading. There are far to many books started but on the back burner at the moment. Good Moon Rising is great! For a long time when I was in high school my library didn't have a copy of Annie on My Mind and Good Moon Rising was the only YA book with lesbian characters that I could get my hands on. I must have borrowed it a million times! >19 Annie on My Mind is an old favorite for me too, but I want to reread it. I hadn't even known about Good Moon Rising, but it sounds great so I think I'll read that too. Thanks!
Just finished my fifth book of the challenge from the Orange Prize category (it's Orange January over in the Gi ... ... 2008 and really liked it. I also read and enjoyed Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog last year.
From your GLBT category, Annie On My Mind is an old favorite, although I prefer Garden's Good Moon Rising. Boy Meets Boy was good too, I read that when it first came out. I liked The Charioteer ... ...

I recently finished The Tragedy of Miss Geneva Flowers by Joe Babcock which I enjoyed (and I will hopefully have a review up soon). I don't know that I would really classify it ... ... sorrel, Mazuma ?(a Japanese green that looks and tastes like dandilion), arugula, spinach, and kale. That made me get out Annie Sommerville's Everyday Greens for recipe ideas. She has a recipe for potato, onion, and sorrel soup that I think I will make today. Does anyone else belong to a CS ... ... y.
my personal interest is queer YA books, so i have a bias that way, but some of those are favourites beyond the genre - annie on my mind by nancy garden is beautiful, and i really loved girl walking backwards and gravel queen - the latter is so dreamy and idyllic that it makes me ... ... evithan

... beliefs, i struggle to see how banning books for 'questionable' content is ever a good idea. to me, banning something like annie on my mind is in direct opposition to my ethical beliefs, and the beliefs i would one day like my children to have. my the same token, the left behind series ... ... writes good YA fiction novels about girls in love. I just finished The Year They Burned the Books and I'm going on to Annie On My Mind. There are others.. =) ... armbands and stoking the bonfires.
Though they did when Nancy Garden wrote a book about being a gay teenager called Annie on My Mind.
Heavens! We don't want gay teenagers to know that there are other people like them out there! We want them to feel isolated, depressed and ashamed. ... but also going back and purchasing the classics, as well. For example, the main library branch finally purchased a copy of Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden in the last year or so.
I think as YA literature continues to gain more respect from both the publishing industry, libraries, and ...
