Finished Water for Elephants and loved it, until the last chapter, which I liked but think was a bit, ummmm.... neat. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers!)
I'm just starting John Keegan's The Second World War, and am still reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.

I just finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen which was a recommended read by one of my literacy class colleagues -- great book! Very enjoyable. Also finished Resolution by Ro ... This new group definitely grabbed my attention. Great idea. Best book I've read this year would have to be Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Almost running neck and neck with that one was Atonement by Ian McEwan. As soon as I saw the movie trailer, I went out and bought the book ... ... evidently haven't read very many Algonquin books, but I have loved the two I've read, both of which I reviewed on my blog. Water For Elephants was my first Algonquin book and I was able to get past the sad parts pretty easily and I agree with Message 10 that the ending is quite sweet.
The ... I can't help but think that I am meant to read Water for Elephants..I have never bought it, but two have been given to me. I mooched one away, but have one on my shelf. Whenever I am looking for another book it sort of jumps up and down and waves......
One of the best things for me, about ARCs ... Oh, goodness, if you can handle Tomato Girl, I don't think you'll find Water for Elephants too sad at all. The ending is very tender, sweet, and uplifting.

I thought Water for Elephants was good but not exceptional. Hands down it's Peace Like a river by Leif Enger. In fact, it is one of the best books I've ever read. I also loved Water for Elephants. The most revelatory book would have to be A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. Lots of good books already this year! I'm just beginning Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I totally agree with you about Water for Elephants. I really liked the way the story moved back and forth through time, but I, too, thought the ending was flat. 46. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Count me in as a fan of this book. I found it well written and the details of life in the circus and the depression very interesting. However, what is with the books that I have read lately that have not had strong endings? I thought that the present ... Hi pesserj - I'm reading Water for Elephants also and its interesting, life in the circus. Its great to see photos in an adult fiction novel. I finished Platform and really feel indifferent to this book. I also finished Water for elephants which was a better read :)
Am now reading Under the skin and I am only a few pages in. I just finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. It was good, but not great. It had an interesting story and interesting characters, but somehow didn't completely gel for me. Ah well, on to the next book - I'll have to decide what I'm in the mood for tonight. #177 - Nikelini - I bought a black zippered book holder at Chapters and it works well.
Today I picked up Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen amd Glass Voices by Carol Bruneau. They were both on hold at the library and came at the same time. I'll be doing well to read 2 books in my 3 ... 20. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen: Review coming.
A good book. ... really a short story reader, but there is something about her writing that just sucks you in!

Classic book, I'm a sucker for animal stories and this one didn't disappoint.

I liked this book, I don't know if I thought it was as great as what some other people said. It was a very fast read though, I read it ... I really liked Water for Elephants too. She has written a couple of good horsey novels, which you might want to look into: Riding Lessons and Flying Changes.

What a great book! I was a bit hesitant on reading this because of some things I'd heard about others having difficulty getting through certain parts, but I'm glad I decided to pick this one up. It was such a captivating story and it was a quick read ... #104 heatherlynn85: How do you like Water For Elephants? It's on my TBR list, and heavily wishlisted on BookMooch, and I was thinking of moving it up the list. The reviews of it are good, and it's on Stephen King's shortlist (which is why I bought in the first place.) i'm just about finished with water for elephants.. should be done with it by the end of the work day. there's nothing like getting paid to read on a slow day! I just picked up Water for Elephants at the airport, because (sigh) I tend to like Oprah Book Club kinds of titles.
I had assumed it was a chick novel, and in fact kept referring to it as "Like Water for Chocolate Elephants" in my head.
I was wrong, and in a fantastic way. (Not that I don't ... ... was appalling by any standards yet she wrote beautifully and lovingly about her family. I'm a serious HP fan, loved Water for Elephants, hated The Memory Keeper's Daughter and only read about 70 pages of it, enjoyed The Kite Runner and will be reading The Road for bookclub.

I have a question about Water for Elephants by fellow vet. Sara Gruen. Did you read it? If so, what did you think about the treatment of the circus animals? The not-quite vet. in the novel seems to do a good job with the care of the stock.
