A collection of short stories centered on various contemporary and historical people who live in a small Oregon coastal town. My favorite story in the collection is True Love, which takes the cliche of true love and turns it upside down & sideways. I came to LeGuin through science fiction & fantasy, and don't really read much mainstream or contemporary fiction, and pretty well stay away from anything with too much realism. So while it was interesting and enjoyable to see LeGuin work outside of the genre, the themes explored in Searoad just didn't capture me. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 159030084X, Paperback)

In one of her most deeply felt works of fiction, Le Guin explores the dreams and sorrows of the inhabitants of Klatsand, Oregon, a beach town where ordinary people bring their dreams and sorrows for a weekend or the rest of their lives, and sometimes learn to read what the sea writes on the sand. Searoad is the story of a particular place that could be any place, and of a people so distinctly drawn they could be any of us.
