livrecache, I said very little on BC about Man in the Dark. Certainly nothing profound, and even less that you said. I just don't seem to have time (or space in my head) right now to concoct anything *in depth*. ;-) Re depressing vs sad: I agree with livrecache, in that the depressing ...

... was really fascinating, and strange. I've not journalled my thoughts yet, but I will.) I'll have to read your thoughts on Man in the Dark, crimson-tide. I really liked it, but I didn't say anything profound.

How are you going with Shantaram, wookiebender? This morning I finished the most excellent Man in the Dark. Next up will probably be A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

... I have another of the series on my shelf - The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood - so must dig that out sometime. Now onto Man in the Dark by Paul Auster.

... listed too), but I haven't applied for one as I have a delinquent unfiled review (ironically, for the last Paul Auster, Man in the Dark!) so suspect I haven't a hope of getting it as I am too late to satisfy The Algorithm. Sigh. The Brooklyn Follies is a really good one, although it ...

#76 wookiebender, compared to the only other Auster book I've read, Man in the Dark is very straightforward, although not in a conventional sense: it's more interesting than that. But where he's coming from (technical term for the theme/s) is very apparent, whereas I spent a lot of time wondering ...

livrecache, I find Paul Auster's books puzzling, but compelling. I haven't got Man in the Dark yet, but I'm really looking forward to getting it. Finished Deeds of the Disturber, with Amelia Peabody poking nefarious crims with her trusty parasol and trying to run a household which now ...

Just finished Man in the Dark by Paul Auster and I was very impressed. It's only the second of this author's wok that I've read, and I wasn't too engaged by that one (The Book of Illusions). But this one really enthralled me.

... I'd have said I don't care for books written as a series of letters, but this one works, for me at least. Next up: Man in the Dark by Paul Aster

Man in the Dark by Paul Auster not my favorite Auster, but still good

Read Paul Auster's MAN IN THE DARK today. Terrific concept but things go haywire with the novel about 3/4 of the way through when a story within the story abruptly peters out. I'd give it 3 stars out of 5. Could have been a lot better.

... then there are three books the library has brought in for me waiting on the second shelf of the bookcase in our bedroom: MAN IN THE DARK (Paul Auster) THE SAVAGE DETECTIVES (Roberto Bolano) CRIME (Irvine Welsh) Think I'm not looking forward to those 3 beauties? And then, of ...

... with Auster online from Stop Smiling magazine. I really like his books, although I have to admit that I didn't enjoy Man in the Dark as much of some of the others.

The New York Trilogy was one of my favorite reads for March. Because I enjoyed it so much, I then read Man in the Dark and Timbuktu before the end of March, and am now a Paul Auster fan.

>75: another Auster fan! I got Man in the Dark as an ER (really made my day, had been a terrible week up until that profile comment :-)). He does have quite a consistent style, so if you liked Man in the Dark you'll probably like a lot of his other stuff (although with the contemporary Iraq ...

Man in the Dark by Paul Auster This is my first foray into the world of Paul Auster, and I must say it was a pleasant foray as foray’s go. Man in the Dark was written in that seemingly new wave popular “no quotation” style that takes a minute to get used to but then becomes somewhat ...

I ended March with 2 short books by Paul Auster. I was intrigued by the alternate history aspect of Man in the Dark, his most recent work, in which several states secede from the union after the Supreme Court declared Bush the winner of the 2000 election. However the ending was abrupt, and I ...

Slight spoiler post* abw, I was really getting into the alternate history of Man in the Dark and blammo- it just ended. I do think Auster was playing one of his metafiction tricks. Let me hook the reader and then kill the story in one sentence. That'll teach them to get comfortable in my novel. Or ...

Man in the Dark by Paul Auster; read last year

kiwi--It's quite short, and The New York Trilogy is a much better book. I liked Man in the Dark because of the alternate history aspect, although that plot aspect was resolved abruptly, and somewhat unsatisfactorily.

Thanks for the link, abw. I was quite disappointed with Man in the Dark, but having said that, I cannot remember why. I read it last year and my memory doesn't extend back past about 10 books!! I am a fan of his earlier work and do like his writing style, though.

Well, looks like it doesn't work here either. :( Last 2 books for March: 30. Man in the Dark by Paul Auster (2008) 180 pp This is Paul Auster's latest novel. In it, a retired critic with insomnia lies awake at night and tells himself stories. The story he tells is of a world in ...

Yes, LW3rd, it was interesting and I always need a non-fiction break after a run of fiction. 72. Man In The Dark by Paul Auster If you are an Auster fan, I think you will be very disappointed with this slim novel, which really should be called a novella. The book is about a 70 ...

I don't know. You tell me. Man in the Dark by Paul Auster And what about breakfast tomorrow morning?

#132: coppers: I just finished Man in the Dark myself -- and while it's not necessarily Auster's best work, it is a fascinating little gem of involuted storytelling.

I'm about half way through Paul Auster's new book Man in the Dark. Wow, what a wonderful story and such an interesting concept!
