beautifully illustrated; text lacked imagination. Mr. Salten should have followed the "less is more" aphorism for this one. ( )

Bambi: The Good Parts Version.

If you have managed to avoid the original novel, with its cute woodland animals and their ever-mounting death toll, and you don't want to be utterly horrified or in some way permanently damaged, chapter by chapter--then be clever, like Nick van Frankenhuyzen & his editor have been, and stop while the story is still cute.

Nick's illustrations are lovely and evocative, and the text, taken directly from Salten's novel, reminds that Salten wasn't morbid on every page--which is a great fortune for us, as it has resulted in a very simple, very lovely little book. ( )
