From my library, keeping to the mystery genre I suggest Thus Was Adonis Murdered by Sarah Caudwell. Her young barristers always make me laugh. ... Above Suspicion. another Gothis/mysrty writer is Phyliss Whitney. Not pre-1965 but a similar style ar those like Thus was Adonis Murdered by Sarah Caudwell set among he bright young deniszens of in a London law firm. Also the mysterie written by Georgette Heyer like Penhallow ... ... Stasia, I love it!

I just finished Thus Was Adonis Murdered by Sarah Caudwell, and found it highly entertaining. This was the second book in the series that I've read by her, and I'll definitely get the others. Now I'm reading Whose Body? by Sayers. I know she is a widely loved author, and I don't see any ... ... of was The Nameless Detective. A little searching around for what I could remember, though, and I'd have to say it's the Hilary Tamar series by Sarah Caudwell. ... Inn nobs (i.e., barristers). She specialized in tax law and wrote four mystery novels: The Shortest Way to Hades, Thus Was Adonis Murdered, and The Sirens Sang of Murder. In counting, I find only three novels listed here, so perhaps the fourth was purloined or perhaps I have been ... ... anything too heavy for reading on New Year's Eve but it was a fun romp of a mystery and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Murder Must Advertise by Dorothy Sayers ... not get thru that book. I didn't find any of the characters appealing, didn't like the writing, and couldn't care less re Thus was Adonis Murdered.
I finished Thus Was Adonis Murdered this past week. Big thank you to all those who recommended Sarah Caudwell. She is a hoot! Too bad she wrote so few books (only four), but I'm definitely on the lookout for the rest of them. We read Sarah Caudwell's Thus Was Adonis Murdered for one of my book discussion groups, and I could not get through that book. It's one of the rare times I didn't finish a book.
I did find it interesting that nowhere in the book does the author make clear the sex of the protagonist, so the ... ... I have read is the Virgin Suicides. I would also add:

Pamelad - I was recently looking for a book, and Thus Was Adonis Murdered leaped off the shelf into my hands. It was recommended to me some time ago, and I bought it but never read it. I've added it to my teetering TBR ... ... Hilary's ex-students. A good one to start with is The Sirens Sang of Murder.
