"High-octane" - ironically for a book about a world tenuously sustained by a mysterious Pipe - is a word that seems to have been waiting for this book to come along and claim it. Our unnamed narrator is part of a gang of mercenaries who hire ... oo I have Gone-Away World on my wishlist, glad to see another positive review.
I have just finished The City and the City by China Melville. I highly recommend it to crime/fantasy lovers, its not as fantastical as his previous works but I think its his best so far. I finished Anansi Boys last week (good fun), and am most of the way through Nick Harkaway's Gone-Away World, which I think counts as SF of sorts - dystopian/apocalyptic fiction. Completely mad but very enjoyable. One of the most audacious twists I've read in a long time which he doesn't quit ... ... discriminating, so I don't think I've read anything truly dire

Also, tash99, judging from the LT reviews, I think I will like The Gone Away World, I'll definitely pick it up next time I find myself in a bookstore. Gave up on The Gone-Away World after 100 pages. Wasn't enjoying it and am hard-pressed to understand why so many people think it's so good. Picked up Fahrenheit 451 instead. Halfway through that and rapidly coming to the conclusion it's the Catcher in the Rye of the science fiction world... Oh noes! The Curse of Rand strikes again!
I gave up on The Gone-Away World. I'll return to it when I've more free time to wade through its waffle. Instead I'm trying Fahrenheit 451. I love the film, remains to be seen how I feel about the book... I read The Gone-Away World and didn't enjoy it a great deal. Sure there were sections which were written well, sections that were funny but it was too long, too rambling and less than the sum of its parts. I'm reading The Gone-Away World now and not enjoying it. Before that I read Seeds of Earth*, and wrote a little on it here.
* No bloody touchstone. Sigh. Just finished The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway which I thoroughly enjoyed. Certainly the best book I've read in the last few years. Now reading Vol.3 in The Twelve Kingdoms series by Fuyumi Ono. How are you liking Catch-22? If you like it you might try a newish book called The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway.

This is easily the best book I have read in the last 12 months. I could spend the next month re-reading it.
The book is part kung-fu epic, part sci-fi romance, part philosophic screed on what it means to be human, plus post-apocalyptic adventure ... You mean like Nick Harkaway's The Gone-Away World? That was published as mainstream.
I suspect if someone writes a novel, no matter how literary, set in a galactic empire with spaceships and aliens, then they know they're writing sf and they have every intention of having it published as sf. I'm debating whether to post a review of The Gone-Away World. I think I'll post one on LT but not on my blog. I was interviewed about it by Lenore, so in a way I've already posted about it once and I'm not sure it ... Finished The Gone-Away World, woohoo!!!!! So glad to be moving on. Now I'm torn between Confessions of a Contractor, which is the library's copy, finishing Acedia and Me, which I stopped halfway through and am not excited about picking up again, and The Swap, which is my august ER book. This weekend I started and put down The Terminal Spy and Gone Away World. I just couldn't get into either one. Looks like my MIL will be doing guest reviews on my blog this month. These are all requests that were made in July and have not been received. I know some of been released so I do not expect to still get ARC's. I feel ... Having made it halfway though The Gone-Away World, I'm going to do something I very rarely do and stop reading it in order to pick up a book that has been calling to me all week. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a step outside my usual genre selections, but it looks fantastic, and I've heard ... I'm about 100 pages into The Gone-Away World, and it's weird but good so far.

Really want to get started on American Wife or The Gone-Away World, but I can't decide which. I got a nice fuzzy final copy of The Gone-Away World, about which I am very excited, along with two copies (one for me, one for giveaway) of After the Fire:A True Story of Friendship and Survival, which isn't something I would normally read, but the publicist was really nice. Yesterday I received The Gone-Away World, and two YA books from HarperTeen, Freeze Frame and Getting the Girl. They want both of the YAs reviewed by 9/1. Maybe they should have used something other than UPS Ground to send them in that case? LOL. Actually I'm thrilled to have them, and they ... Oh! You got Nation! So jealous! I will eagerly await your review.
As for me, I got Gone Away World but don't quite know when I'm going to read that as my class assignments have started rolling in . . . gulp. I hope I still love to read at the end of all this! Gone Away World arrived in eastern Kansas and I have a mysterious package from Penguin waiting for me at my local UPS office.
