... on my tbr pile. I'm a fan of the Ender series, it does get a little fanciful towards the end but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The goneaway world and The name of the wind are on my fantasy list for next year's 1010 challenge. I'm currently reading The girl who kicked the hornet's nest and it ...

Flossie--I think I remember your review of The Gone-Away World and that's why I grabbed it at the library when I saw it. As I said above, I thought the writing was brilliant, and the concept was novel. What I didn't like, I guess, was the ninja part, which I didn't really understand. (I also ...

... reading that I really liked. That massive hole in In the Woods REALLY upset me (I think "upset" is the right word). And The Gone-Away World is just insane. Personally, I *did* love it, despite its flaws: about 10 pages in, I thought the hectic style was going to really annoy me, but somehow I ...

#138 I like the sound of The Gone-Away World and so I'll take the risk and try it at some point!

76. The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway (2008) 574 pp This book is sui generis, and I'm not sure how to categorize it. I'm also not sure I "got it," especially at the end when things got wilder and wilder. However, I don't think I'm going to spend the time to reread it to see if I can ...

Well, I just couldn't keep hacking away at The Gone Away World ... I kept truly struggling to pick it up. The author is talented, the sarcasm and wit quite funny, but the characters just icky and I found I did not care much one way or another ... about anything in this book. It's too bad, ...

I'm loving, but sometimes struggling, with The Gone-Away World, by Nick Harkaway. It's a post-apocolyptic story with unforgettable characters and a huge serving of imagination and fun. Has anyone else read this?

I'm having a love/hate relationship with The Gone-Away World, by Nick Harkaway. There's no question it's brilliant, and most of the time I want to go outside and press the book into a stranger's hands.

... of sorts). So I also started, on a HUGELY STRONG recommendation of a friend (who, like me, doesn't even read sci fi), The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway. I'm only about 20 pages in but it is unlike any other reading experience that comes to mind. So far, it's very captivating and I ...

Great review of The Gone Away World that got you a thumb! On the look out list for me now.

64. The Gone-Away world - Nick Harkaway (532 pages) "High-octane" - ironically for a book about a world tenuously sustained by a mysterious Pipe - is a word that seems to have been waiting for this book to come along and claim it. Our unnamed narrator is part of a gang of mercenaries who hire ...

oo I have Gone-Away World on my wishlist, glad to see another positive review. I have just finished The City and the City by China Melville. I highly recommend it to crime/fantasy lovers, its not as fantastical as his previous works but I think its his best so far.

I finished Anansi Boys last week (good fun), and am most of the way through Nick Harkaway's Gone-Away World, which I think counts as SF of sorts - dystopian/apocalyptic fiction. Completely mad but very enjoyable. One of the most audacious twists I've read in a long time which he doesn't quit ...

... discriminating, so I don't think I've read anything truly dire 8) What is the best book you've read in the past year? The Gone Away World, Nick Harkaway - just amazing. Sadly I don't think it really took off (at least not here in Oz), but if you like Catch-22, Douglas Adams, or even ...

... Common reading, confessions thereof, January-init. April Reading now: The Gone-Away World - Nick Harkaway This year's list (decided to dispense with the touchstones as correcting them again every time I added a book was getting old):

... the Earth by Paul Murdin ER book, I'll have to write a review but I'm not sure yet what I'm going to say 32. Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway 33. Dead Man's Mirror by Agatha Christie

... Peter Brett * 7.7 The Vast Spread of the Seas by Fuyumi Ono * 7.8 Heaven's Net is Wide by Lian Hearn * 7.9 The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway *

Also, tash99, judging from the LT reviews, I think I will like The Gone Away World, I'll definitely pick it up next time I find myself in a bookstore.

Gave up on The Gone-Away World after 100 pages. Wasn't enjoying it and am hard-pressed to understand why so many people think it's so good. Picked up Fahrenheit 451 instead. Halfway through that and rapidly coming to the conclusion it's the Catcher in the Rye of the science fiction world...

Oh noes! The Curse of Rand strikes again! I gave up on The Gone-Away World. I'll return to it when I've more free time to wade through its waffle. Instead I'm trying Fahrenheit 451. I love the film, remains to be seen how I feel about the book...

I read The Gone-Away World and didn't enjoy it a great deal. Sure there were sections which were written well, sections that were funny but it was too long, too rambling and less than the sum of its parts.

I'm reading The Gone-Away World now and not enjoying it. Before that I read Seeds of Earth*, and wrote a little on it here. * No bloody touchstone. Sigh.

Just finished The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway which I thoroughly enjoyed. Certainly the best book I've read in the last few years. Now reading Vol.3 in The Twelve Kingdoms series by Fuyumi Ono.

How are you liking Catch-22? If you like it you might try a newish book called The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway.

I cannot recommend The Gone-Away World strongly enough. It's wild and fabulous and I can hardly believe it's a first novel.

The Gone-Away World sounds right up my street, wish it wasn't so popular at the library! Thanks for the review.

5. The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway This is easily the best book I have read in the last 12 months. I could spend the next month re-reading it. The book is part kung-fu epic, part sci-fi romance, part philosophic screed on what it means to be human, plus post-apocalyptic adventure ...

You mean like Nick Harkaway's The Gone-Away World? That was published as mainstream. I suspect if someone writes a novel, no matter how literary, set in a galactic empire with spaceships and aliens, then they know they're writing sf and they have every intention of having it published as sf. 10. The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway. I've had this one on my shelf for a while, and been looking forward to it. I wanted to 'save it for last', but since I found bookmooch last never comes. Anyway, it was worth the wait: one of the best books, never mind best debut novels, that I've ...

Finished The Gone-Away World, woohoo!!!!! So glad to be moving on. Now I'm torn between Confessions of a Contractor, which is the library's copy, finishing Acedia and Me, which I stopped halfway through and am not excited about picking up again, and The Swap, which is my august ER book.

This weekend I started and put down The Terminal Spy and Gone Away World. I just couldn't get into either one. Looks like my MIL will be doing guest reviews on my blog this month. LOL I'm currently reading Nation and loving it so far.

Working on The Gone-Away World, which also seemed endless, but just started getting good again.

Having made it halfway though The Gone-Away World, I'm going to do something I very rarely do and stop reading it in order to pick up a book that has been calling to me all week. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a step outside my usual genre selections, but it looks fantastic, and I've heard ...

... up on Acedia and Me after 50 pages, a la Nancy Pearl. Not a bad book, but not a good fit for me. I'm now 30 pages into The Gone-Away World and not sure what I think of if yet. Richard Russo and Bridge of Sighs totally ruined me for other books right now.

... today, but I'm out of town for a wedding, and things are busier than expected. Maybe tomorrow. Then, I'll start on The Gone-Away World, which I'm very excited about.

just finished The Keepsake and about to start The Gone Away World. shucks....guess I should do some laundry first.

I got The Gone-Away World today as well as a hardcover of Guernica (already got the paperback) and Sarah's Key from St. Martin's Reading Group Gold. I also got the sampler book from Harper Collins.

... I'll get to finish it before the end of the day tomorrow. Really want to get started on American Wife or The Gone-Away World, but I can't decide which.

I got a nice fuzzy final copy of The Gone-Away World, about which I am very excited, along with two copies (one for me, one for giveaway) of After the Fire:A True Story of Friendship and Survival, which isn't something I would normally read, but the publicist was really nice.

Yesterday I received The Gone-Away World, and two YA books from HarperTeen, Freeze Frame and Getting the Girl. They want both of the YAs reviewed by 9/1. Maybe they should have used something other than UPS Ground to send them in that case? LOL. Actually I'm thrilled to have them, and they ...

Oh! You got Nation! So jealous! I will eagerly await your review. As for me, I got Gone Away World but don't quite know when I'm going to read that as my class assignments have started rolling in . . . gulp. I hope I still love to read at the end of all this!

Gone Away World arrived in eastern Kansas and I have a mysterious package from Penguin waiting for me at my local UPS office.

Let's see...I have ARCs of American Wife and The Gone Away World for Sept 2nd. Acedia and Me before the 16th. Bitter Sweets before the 30th. Crown Publishing was kind enough to send me a beautiful new copy of Why We Hate Us, so I'll be reading that ASAP. Also on deck are Inter ...

Today I received The Gone Away World and the Collins Sampler. I received Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford from Harper Teen yesterday. They want the review by 9/1 - but who knows if their site will be back up by then!

I just received The Gone-Away World from the UPS guy. (Gene was off today). Wow, can we say day-glow pink and green. I sure am happy the actual cover is not what they sent out on the ARC. I should have no trouble picking that book out from the stack so long as my eyes can take the brightness. ...
