I love this book! It's one of the crown jewels of my New York collection -- a witty and good-natured "guide for the woman vacationist" to the New York City of 1939, including the World's Fair. Charmingly illustrated, the book tells the single "career gal" everything she'd need to know about arriving in New York by train, booking in at a reasonable hotel, getting around, shopping, dining out alone, finding companionship (or hiring it!) and so on. It's deliciously dated -- just the wardrobe tips alone are worth it to savor (or rue) the way mores have changed since the mid-20th century. ( )
