Very cute story about a little chick who can't help but make the sounds from other animals. Very silly and very entertaining. ( )

The wood block illustrations are the real star of this story for toddlers through grade 1. They are big bold and colorful, making this a good choice for a read aloud. The story also encourages interaction because Little chick goes around the farm learning the sounds of the other animals. We make the sounds along with him and, at the end, we join a cacophony of animal sounds as he shows his mother what he's learned.

This little chick goes to visit all his animal neighbors, he talks to them in their own language. Super cute, he moos with the cows, oinks with the pigs and quacks with the ducks. At the end of the day, he tells his mother all about his day, lots and lots of farm noises for that page. ( )

Follow the adventures of a little chick who visits all the other animals on the farm. Incredibly this multilingual chick makes the sounds of whichever animal is being visiting. The book is patterned. The chick visits an animal and then on the following two page spread the chick is enthusiastically making another animal’s noises. For example, a reader learns that the chick has decided to graze with the cows, and then on the following pages the chick is mooing. The book’s pattern lends itself to being sung which combined with the animal noises makes it an excellent candidate for use at story time. Babies will enjoy the song while older children can easily sing along and predict the animal sounds. The illustrations in this book are recognized for their excellence by the New York Times and are created with vinyl engravings, printed wood textures, and watercolor washes. Ages: 0-5. ( )

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0763617164, Hardcover)

This little chick has a lot to say. Making the rounds on the farm one day, our fine, feathered friend learns to mimic all his barnyard buddies, from pigs to frogs to cows:
This little chick from over the way
went to laze with the cows one day.
And what do you think they heard him say?
Moo Moo Moo Moo Moo Moo
Young readers will love predicting what sounds the feisty chick will make next as he swims, jumps, and skips his way through the day. And everyone will be as ready as he is to curl up for a much-needed rest when he finally returns home to his mom to share all he has learned. John Lawrence's take on a traditional rhyme is enhanced by his eye-catching illustrations, made with vinyl engravings, printed wood textures, and watercolor washes. Especially marvelous are the black sheep frolicking in their curly, swirly wool coats. (Ages 1 to 4) --Emilie Coulter
