I usually go back and re-read these all every few years or so. wonderful storyline - it always sucks me right in. Was a fun read back in 1980. This was the very first epic fantasy that I ever read, back in the late 70s. It's very derivative of The Lord of the Rings, but quite a bit more accessible. All in all, it's an excellent introduction to the genre, especially for a tween boy. I thought this was a great book. It was years later that I read LOR and learned it was a knockoff. no reviews | add a review

I found it be be far too similar to be enjoyable. It follows the characters and plot of LOTR very closely, and while I still would have enjoyed that if the writing had been spectacular, it wasn't good enough to make up for the blatant copying. I read to a little more than halfway through and wasn't able to finish. (
