Where the Buffalo Roam by Michael Zimmer is a western novel that tells the story of Clay Littlebull. Kidnapped by the Kiowa when he was very young, Clay never really knew his black slave parents. Kicked around from place to place, he eventually found a home and an adopted father in the Choctaw Nation. When his father died, he was no longer recognized as a member of the tribe and so set out to find a place where he could belong. Unfortunately, he was taken by slavers who didn’t care if he was a free man or not. Finding himself in chains, Clay quickly learns what it is to be a black man in the 1830’s. When he and his fellow captured blacks break free and escape it is not without violence and they leave behind the bodies of a couple of these slavers.

Clay makes his way to Leavenworth, Kansas and partners up with a white man, Ty Calhoun . They head out to the wilderness to hunt buffalo and trade with the Indians. They do not know of the vicious men that are on their trail, ruthlessly tracking Clay and vowing to get revenge on a black that dared to kill white men.

A classic western tale of revenge and justice but with the twist of having the main character a black man. Lots of action, interesting characters and a good story propelled me through this book. ( )
