Libro is Austria's book retailer for the lower middle class offering a mix of music, games, bestsellers, discount books and paper. At the start of the millennium, an unchecked CEO started a reckless expansion without the required financial means. Libro expanded to Germany, to large-scale bookstores and internet retailing. Any single expansion might have worked, the combined cash drain proved fatal. At first, Libro managed to find unsophisticated external partners to buy into their fantasy. Already on the verge of melting down, it sold new stocks to the ignorant public. The new money lasted but for a year. The board of directors (composed of Austria's best and brightest), the auditors KPMG and Arthur Andersen as well as multiple investment banks displayed an unspeakable level of incompetence (but were never punished for it). The stock holders and employees paid the price instead.

Filled with extended quotes, the book gives a good account of the sorry affair, the rise and fall of a CEO and a company, which has since re-emerged as an unspectacular, solid local retailer. ( )
