I thought that the chapter book, Maybelle Goes to Tea was a great read for children just getting into chapter books. The story was all about a cockroach, Maybelle and her two friends, Henry and Maurice who are a flea and a fly. They go on many adventures throughout the Peabody’s home, including breaking every rule of being a bug to get to Mrs. Peabody’s chocolate surprise cookies during tea. The plot of the book is very engaging for young readers, especially due to its modern fantasy aspect. The characters and the humor that the author incorporates, such as when the people chase the bugs around their home, brings life to the story, which has for a fabulous ending. The second thing I liked about the book was the illustrations that it incorporated. Although they were simple and black and white, they helped readers formulate what characters looked liked and add to the humor. The illustrations are on just about every page and are very helpful to the engagement. Overall the big idea of the story is stated on the last page of the book perfectly. “Life is full of surprises.” ( )
