Prairies by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent is a survey of North American prairies. In five chapters, she details the American prairie, plant and animal life, destruction, and conservation. Dr. Patent includes a glossary and an index at the end of the book. The tone is neutral and informative. The photographs do accompany the text as visual aids, and the book contains much information for a book geared towards grades 3-5. This book could be used in an elementary school science class lesson about different ecosystems or biomes. ( )

This book tells about the plant and animal life that inhabits our world's prairies. There are beautiful photographs to go along with what the book is describing.
