Wow... Sweetsmoke, Walls of Jericho, Shadowland... my goodness there's a lot of good stuff here! :) Can't wait to find these ones...

#226: Caroline, Sweetsmoke is definitely the better written of the two, but Walls of Jericho is a good book for the genre. I hope your husband likes The 5000 Year Leap - I appreciated the fact that the author based so much of the book on the Founding Fathers own writings and makes use of ...

Sweetsmoke has gone onto the wishlist and Shadowland has been mooched. Darn you!!!!!!!!

... Two, unhappy happenstance. But three...that's simply malevolent plotting on your part, I know it! Sweetsmoke sounds too interesting not to enjoy, involving characters, good plot. Walls of Jericho has too many pluses to ignore...main characters from opposite sides of ...

Walls of Jericho and Sweetsmoke have made it to my wishlist. Thanks for the recommendations, Stasia. I'll have to get The 5000 Year Leap for my husband .. he'll love this book. Great timing too because I was trying to think of a good book to get him as a present.

... but not without putting political stumbling blocks in the way; recommended (this is the first book in a series BTW) 332. Sweetsmoke by David Fuller - an excellent piece of historical fiction, with a mystery involved - I do not remember who recommended this, but a big thank you; highly ...

#42: Sweetsmoke looks very good! Thanks for the recommendation.

I have an ER copy of Sweetsmoke which I am willing to mail to anyone in the U.S. who is interested in it. Just leave me a note on my profile page expressing your interested. Thanks. ETA - Someone just requested this, so it is no longer available.

27. Sweetsmoke by David Fuller - amazing! One of the best books that I have read this year - extremely well written and thought provoking.

I finished Sweetsmoke last night and absolutely LOVED it! I read it in about two days it was so wonderful. I am about to start The Labors of Hercules by Agatha Christie. It doesn't appear that this will take long to read as it is very short and appears to be a collection of short stories ...

... Weekend today. I plan on watching the movie in the very near future as well. After that, I believe that I will start Sweetsmoke which is an Early Reviewer which I received and completely forgot about until now. I believe I have two other Early Reviewers which came and got stuck in a pile ...

... not great, books this quarter. However, managed to find three with a 4.5 or 5 stars. Lark and Termite (5 stars) Sweetsmoke (4-1/2 stars) Ptolemy's Gate (4-1/2 stars)

I think Any Given Doomsday must be listing three times for anyone who received it since mine's doing the same. Sweetsmoke is another one that's showing up more than once, for the record...

... I have some ARC's and newer books coming in fairly often. Two I have available immediately are: The Fireman's Wife Sweetsmoke Just send me a PM or email. I never know when I am getting a new ARC.

Some of the least enjoyable ARC's were Sweetsmoke, Beef: The Untold Story, Falconer on the Edge, Some of the Dead are Still Breathing, American Buffalo: In Search of a Lost Icon, Telex from Cuba. If I had purchases any of these I would have been disappointed. Some of the best ARC's ...

I finished Sweetsmoke by David Fuller. Cassius is a 30-something slave on a Virginia tobacco plantation, Sweetsmoke, owned by Hoke Howard, who has been Cassius’s only owner and had named him at birth. The whereabouts of his parents is never discussed, but he was raised by old Mam' Rosi ...

I really enjoyed Sweetsmoke maybe enjoyed is not the right word. I just think it was a very good book.

A Crime So Monstrous and Sweetsmoke.

Finished Soldier's Heart by Gary Paulsen and began Sweetsmoke by David Fuller. I must say that his description of slave life is gritty.

Actually, I have Sweetsmoke at home as a library book. My husband started it, and didn't like it. I haven't looked it over yet because I'm not all that crazy about reading about slavery. I'm not going to think about it until April (I know it's only in two days). I'm deep into a book now by Abra ...

I enjoyed Sweetsmoke by David Fuller - it was an ER book last year. I'm not sure, though, how popular this book is now.

... Reading Globally slavery theme, I really want to stick to fiction. I think I have it might have it narrowed down now to Sweetsmoke, Property, or Song Yet Sung. If I can find another insteresting, but more obscure novel, I might try something else.

... missing quotation marks a lot lately, always new or new-ish books. (The Road, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Sweetsmoke (where the free people have quotation marks and the black slaves don't), etc) It hasn't bothered me. The effects can be interesting. But, what strikes me the ...

David Fuller made a very nice comment on my blog when I mentioned Sweetsmoke as one of my favorite reads of 2008. It was a book I got through the LTER program, and it was very refreshing. He's a sweet guy.

... feature. I'm not sure publishers will like this, particularly when the ARCs are from the Early Reviewers program (like Sweetsmoke). On the one hand, publishers may appreciate "two bites at the apple" and will like the chance to get two reviews from a single ARC. On the other hand, if ...

6.1.09 a) I've finished my first novel for the year: Sweetsmoke by David Fuller (USA,2008). Set on a tobacco plantation during the American Civil War. Cassius, a slave, vows to find the murderer of his friend Emoline. Some nice writing. An engaging read. (3.5/5) b) Browsing through The L ...

#14 Sweetsmoke by David Fuller completed November 11th, 2008 You know a novel is worthwhile if it the characters and story have stayed with you months after the first reading. Sweetsmoke is a compelling, bittersweet tale of a plantation slave, Cassius Howard, struggling with his sense ...

I got Sweetsmoke that another LTer generously passed on.

Haven't yet, but I plan to begin Sweetsmoke by David Fuller, today. Just finished The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Loved it, so glad that I give some of the group reads a try, I haven't met a looser yet in them!

Since my last post, I've finished Sweetsmoke, which I got via the Early Reviewers program. It was very good. I put that in my New Authors category. I moved on to Animal Dreams, which I liked, but not as much as The Poisonwood Bible. Last but not least, I read Gap Creek. Not great, but ...

I found Sweetsmoke to be an interesting look at a screenwriter's novel. I thought it was a really nice colorful story of historical fiction. It's fun, it's well researched, and covers a lot of different perspectives of slavery. But, I wonder if maybe the book was too visual, too movie-like ...

I meant to be reading Sweetsmoke but made the mistake of peeking at Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters and am already hooked. I needed a little lighter read anyway; slavery was not it!

I just got a message from David Fuller the other day about my review of Sweetsmoke. Love it!

After being in 1862 Virginia with Sweetsmoke by David Fuller, I've gone back in time to 1665-1666 England with Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.

I just finished Sweetsmoke by David Fuller and will be starting Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks next.

31. Sweetsmoke by David Fuller. The review is here. Another good book from LT's Early Reviewer program.

Last night I finished Garden Spells which I thought abysmal. Now reading Olive Kitteridge and Sweetsmoke, both quite good so far.

50. Sweetsmoke by David Fuller I think it's appropriate that I reached my goal by reading my first LT ER book. This was an enjoyable, if somewhat slow, story of a slave's search for his friend's murderer. From here on out I'm not going to set any goals, I'm just going to see how many books I ...

I just finished Inside Out Girl and I've also started up with Sweetsmoke. The Grift is next!

From two books I've been reading. The first is a seen from Sweetsmoke by David Fuller, an early review book. Fuller is a screenwriter, and I think that shows here. For context, this is during the American Civil War. He entered the cornfield at the same time as two Union Soldiers. The ...

#54: Sweetsmoke ...an ER book, and the best one I've recieved so far... sort of a murder mystery set on a plantation during the civil war, but with subject matter treated respectfully and a good character study... highly recommended!

I'm starting Sweetsmoke today, then The Grift and When We Were Romans.
