It's uncanny how much this book and other early retirement books and blogs are alike. In this one, the first chapters are devoted to the author telling her own story of how she achieved early retirement (at age 36). Then, it's a more hands-on guide to frugality in all sorts of areas of spending. There is very little on earning more (though a bit about different streams of income) and very little about investing. It's almost all about cutting expenses, spending little and saving lots. She recommends owning a home outright. The author comments about how it's more of a mindset and it doesn't feel like being deprived. In this one, much of the author's extreme frugality is on things she doesn't get much joy out of. For example, she wanted an elastic to keep her hair out of her face while washing her face. Since it wasn't to look good, but only to serve a function at a specific time, rather than buy an elastic (cheap as that would have been), she re-used some panty hose with a run in them. The point being not so much the saving on an elastic, but also the saving of a trip to the store (where other unplanned purchases might occur) and just the idea of thinking about free solutions and new lives for old products. Multiplied by all sorts of products. It's very much and "if I can do it, so can you" kind of book and, as such, is very inspiring. ( )
