Filled with fun facts and full-color photographs and drawings, this magazine introduces children to a different animal each issue. The magazine nicely pairs text and illustrations, and while there is definitely a visual focus to the magazine, the text is nevertheless engagingly written and scattered in small blocks over the page so young children will not overwhelmed by the volume of text. One particularly nice feature is the tear-out activities section, which includes artwork, stories and poems from readers, and young animal-lovers will likely appreciate the opportunity to share their drawing or creative writing skills. The activities section also includes a themed activity like a puzzle, number game or simple board game, and more activities are available through the Zoobooks website. Beyond advertisements for other Zoobooks products, there is no advertising. The magazine itself is constructed of relatively thick glossy paper and ought to hold up well against wear and tear. Published 10 times per year and costing $30 for a one-year subscription, the magazine is a relatively cost efficient way to supplement a library’s collection of children’s animal books. Recommended for readers age 6 to 12. ( )
