Names on the Land by George R. Stewart: Classic history of how people named the towns and landmarks of the United States. Begins with Pre-Columbian naming habits and ... I'm traveling across America discovering Names on the Land. I'm reading Names on the Land. It's a nice read because each chapter is a separate thread in the historical narrative, so it's easy to put down and pick up again -- not to mention the fact that it's well-written and about an interesting subject (the history of place names in America). ... as boring for too long . . .

I just bought Names on the Land which is an account of how various places in the United States were named. Then of course there are my travel books. . . and the other half read books ... I got released from work early so I wandered into a bookstore and picked up Names on the Land. ... I also recieved a copy of Names of the Land which I had hoped to get in the ER thread...but was not chosen for. It just appeared on my doorstep today from Random House. I definitely didn't request ... I won Names on the Land too, but have not received it yet. I had no idea it was a NYRB! Now, that makes it even more exciting!!!!!! Oh, that's exciting that NYRB is putting out Names on the Land. My mother had this book and it fascinated me as a child. I actually may have kept it when I cleaned out my parents' apartment, but if so, it's buried in a box.
I won Names on the land but haven't received it yet, and on the thread for listing received books it doesn't seem anyone has gotten their NYRB titles yet. Has anyone received anything from New York Review Books yet? Waiting on Names on the land and I don't think I've seen anything posted from this publisher at all. ... /08/2008)XXXX
