Finales del siglo XIX. En el minúsculo pueblo de Abinei, de 164 almas, enrocado sobre los montes de la Cerdeña oriental, un orden divino superior ha igualado siempre las cuentas entre vivos y muertos, puesto que a cada nacimiento siempre corresponde una defunción, y viceversa: así nada cambia jamás. Sin embargo, la extraña muerte de la anciana y rica viuda del notario –mientras en el pueblo una mujer da a luz a dos gemelos– altera la secular inmovilidad matemática de la comunidad. El médico, Pierluigi Dehonis, no hace caso de los números, pero en esta muerte ve algo innatural, terrible. De hecho, piensa en un homicidio, por lo que pide ayuda a un viejo compañero de estudios, el célebre embalsamador Efisio Marini, quien acepta realizar una autopsia al cadáver que confirma su hipótesis: homicidio. Por desgracia, la sombra que amenaza Abinei se alarga: otros crímenes siguen al primero perpetrados con el mismo refinamiento y recurriendo a una macabra simbología. ( )
